maverick and 500
« on: April 22, 2008, 05:25:16 AM »
I have owned a 500 for about 12 years now and have purchase a 20 inch brl for it.  I was in Wally World the other day and saw the Maverick on the shelf.  I was wondering if the Maverick and the 500 brls are interchangeable?  I was thinking about getting a rainy day gun to spray paint cammo.  I am looking used as well but around here the used 500s are the same price as new.  My original 500 has rather nice wood that I do not really want to cover up with paint.  Also, anyone had experience with the Mav.?

Yes, the 500 barrels will fit the Maverick.  Many of the parts between the Maverick and 500 are interchangeable, however there are some design differences.  The Maverick uses a cross-bolt safety rather than the tang safety found on the 500.  The action bars on the Maverick are attached by rivets to the forend.   There was a picture floating around the 'net for a while that showed a forend that broke at the rivet.  I've never seen one in-person or have spoke to anyone who had that happen.

I've had a Maverick 12 ga. going on five years now.  Its been a very nice shotgun.  I was a gift from the Mrs. for me to use as an foul weather/heavy brush gun for squirrels and other upland game.  It quickly became one of my favorite shotguns. Many squirrels have fallen to that gun.  I did removed the factory modified choke and installed a full choke from a Mod 500.

That is basically what I am looking to do.  I want a gun to paint cammo and sit in the rain.  Thanks for the reply.

I have had one for about a year and have put tons of shells through mine. I love it! Just like EVOC I put a full choke in mine. The only thing besides safeties that is different is the forearm and that can be switched over also. Here is the link if you need it:

It is a great gun to have. It is actually American made too. I would highly recommend this gun!
