CZ 550 LS 30-06...should I...
« on: April 02, 2008, 12:39:25 PM »
...BUY one?
I am interested in the CZ 550 LS in 30-06 and would love any inputs on this rifle as too accuracy, smoothness of action and trigger, and if the supplied scope mounts would accommodate Leupold 40 mm scope without having to fool with it.  Whats the going price as well?   Help me out boys, .  I got the itch for this one and should I do it?

I have a FS in a 9.3x62 and it is very accurate.  It is quick to the shoulder and has a nice balance.  If you were talking a real long range firearm I would be a little concerned about the 20 1/2 " barrel.  For anything under 300yds I wouldn't think twice.  The firearm is flat out beautiful in a Retro way I just love!   Buckfever

Excuse me but please explain why a 20 1/2" barrel will effect accuracy when using a scope as sighting equipment?

I have a BSA CF2 Stutzen which is also a full stock and it has a 20" barrel chambered for 270 Win and I have  shot this rifle out to 600 yards with fine accuracy. In fact in the old clubs yearly 600 yard comp I used it to win twice so they changed the rules to not allow it  ::) made it an iron sights only comp. Barrel length does effect velocity but with a scope hasnothing to do with accuracy.

My comment, while not spelled out, was more about velocity for a long range shot for hunting.  If I was using a firearm in the West USA I would think a longer barrel would deliver more velocity if that is what you desire or why you selected this caliber.  In fact I think some one did a study saying shorter fat barrels are more accurate.  Just a thought about  velocity, if it is an important consideration.    Buckfever

Velocity is important to a point  ;) however modern day folks seem to forget that the original 7mm Mauser round had a velocity of around 2300fps, 303 British 2040fps until 1910 when it went to 2450 fps and the original 30-40 was no barn burner either yet all these cartridges dropped game cleanly at extended ranges. perhaps the shooters learned to shoot properly and field craft?

Due to the large fireball at the muzzle with the 20" barreled 270 I switched to faster burning powders which reduced or eliminated the fireball it also helped with velocity according to the book. Did not and still don't have a chronograph however if you put the bullet in the right place the beast will not know that the bullet is only doing 2500 fps and not 2800 fps  ;)

I have a CZ 550 in 30-06, but its not the FS.  Mine has some very nice wood on it.  Its shoots better than I can hold, usually about 1 inch at 100 with reloads.  The set trigger is nice, especially off the bench, but I have forgot to use it on game a time or two.  Some say the gun is a tad heavy compared to others ,but I like it just fine.  Its my only 30-06 now.  Action is pretty good, maybe could be smoother.  Maybe I need to use it more and break it in further.......
Yes, go buy it.  I paid about $500 for mine.  I would not worry about the short barrel if you like the look.
