« on: March 08, 2008, 03:27:28 PM »
Thinking about picking up one to strap to my backpack for hunting & backpacking. Any one got any good or bad to say about them.
I use a pocket knife for small duties, looking for a bigger blade with little weight.   Jay
I dont care what gun Im using as long as Im hunting

I have one as a BugOut knife. Wrapped the handle in friction tape.

Never tried a bushman.  My own personal " pack knife"  is an Incolma machete with the blade cut down to 12".  Doesn't weigh much and it stays strapped to the side of whatever pack I'm carrying.  Being  a light, thin blade means it cuts like crazy, but is no " chopper"  on the thick, hard stuff.  Ontario makes a 12"  machete that most people seem to like for exactly that use.  Then again, the bushman may accomplish the same thing. I've no idea which is heavier or cuts better.

I own three Bushman knives and have given three as gifts.   I love mine.    The steel stays sharp and when it does happen to get a little less than razor sharp it bounces right back with a few licks on steel or stone.   I keep one in the Kitchen, one in my pack and the third hanging on the wall for show.  I "dressed up" the butt with the base of a nice antler, and made a hilt out of a hog's tooth.   All of mine have friction tape on the grip.

It's simply one of the best bargain knives out there.   My kitchen knife has been used daily for 15 years and I still can shave with it.   My pack knife has felled small trees and bushes for the fire and dressed out some hogs.

Buy one - you won't regret it.

I have owned a cold steel bushman for several years now and it is a excellent knife I convexed the blade and taped friction tape from a local sporting goods store around the handle. To improve chopping i stick a 2 ft. piece of wood into the handle. I would advise some common sense with this approach so that you don't break anything. It also works well as a spear (just don't throw it) again with a little common sense it can allow you to cut items that would normally be out of reach it also provides a valuable setback when dispatching trapped animals that haven't been gracious enough to die yet. It will also make short work of a mean dog or rabid charging squirrel.
