I used rice, aquarium sand can be purchased from a pet store or you can wash and dry your own.

Just go to Lowes or Home Depot and buy a bag of masonry sand. The moisture content is not all that high and if you were to put it in a burlap sack or such that breaths. It will dry out the rest of the way if you don't leave out in the rain. Dale

My local lumber/hardware carries a sand-like abrasive for sandblasting, called Kleen-Blast. It's dry and dust free.

I am very fortunate to have access to plastic pellets that are used to make a variety of plastic containers, these make great shooting bags they are water proof. and hold a shape very well. The old bean bag chairs had them in them also. If you can find some of these they work great.

Back Years ago, I got of some  fine gravel at work, heated in a oven, put in bags,
I had made blue jeans pants legs, Sewed up one end on sewing machine, then
sewed other end after filling as tight as I could. They have over 25 years,

I have a canvas bag that pennies came from the mint in.  I filled it with Styrofoam beads from an old bean bag chair.  I've been using it for 30 years.  It's light and it works great.

I wonder how packing peanuts would work? They may give to much though. Dale

This may sound a little nuts, but several years ago I got a couple bags of lead shot in a trade.  Bags of shot make GREAT shooting bags.  They are a bit heavy though, but you might consider carrying them as part of your exercise program.

The bags I use are filled with sand and work just fine.  If the sand you have is wet just pour it into a pan an lets it set for several days and it will dry out.  If your in a hurry, send your wife to Wal Mart and while she is gone use her oven to dry out the sand.

I made mine over 20 years ago from old blue jean legs filled with sand (fine gravel ) from a local bank that's now a condo-park (otherwise known, along with strip malls as "Suburban Blight".)

I used a large Tupperware container 1/2gallon size and put the sand in it I wanted dried in the microwave for a couple minutes with a paper towel over it..I stirred it a couple times...and it was completely dry when I filled my bags..It will be hot when you take it out...so..spread it out on newspapers to allow it to cool...This also kills any bugs that might be in it as well... ;)

I use Rice as well.  Cheap, easy, clean, and has the right amount of give to settle the gun well.  Just keep it dry, or it will sprout and grow.

I have a bag just like that top one that my wife made me a couple years ago.
Not pretty but all my shooting buddies have offered to take it off my hands.
