PROPOSED 2008-09 DEER SEASONS
« on: January 29, 2008, 02:05:53 PM »
i was just looking at the PGC web site and saw the proposed seasons for the upcoming year. apparently the game commission wants to go to a seperate buck season again in the central part of the state. i dont know about any of you but i wish they would just make up their minds about what they want to do.

 http://www.pgc.state.pa.us/pgc/cwp/view.asp?Q=173414&A=11

feel free to chime in on this, but i dont think most people can take off of work twice in 12 days to get away for deer season.

I don't think they went far enough. First they needed to stop all doe hunting except in the over-populated P-Burg/Phili areas. There is still going to be a shortage of deer in the majority of the state.
They also should have totally stopped the combined hunting, going to a separate doe season following rifle. There is way to much of the "if it's brown, it's down" crap going on. People are just blasting away at brown spots running through the woods! That is both un-ethical and un-safe. It makes me cringe every time I see or hear it happening close by. Wondering when one of those bullets is going to find me or another hunter. And three times in the last four years I've come across hunters that have shot illegal deer this way. Once the hunter was gone from the area shortly after he shot a spike. Once I did get the hunter's Tag# and turn him in. And another time I walked up on a guy who had just basted the little antlers off a deer's head with a .44 mag pistol. He wasn't about to let me see his license and threatened me as I tried to. His son was right there watching (and smiling) as this all went down. He's learning the new way of hunting! It's all about getting a deer, no matter how! I did call it in after I got back to camp, but I'm sure they were never caught.
I'm only one person and I've seen ALLOT of Bull Crap in the woods, so that leads me to think that there is allot more of it going on. It's sad to know that the hunters of the past, the true sportsmen are being replaced by this kind of idiot. I feel sorry to think that the regulations need to be adjusted to minimize the opportunity for the "idiots" to get away with raping our sport.

I like it the way it is. I can't take all that time off for different seasons. I have six children and it allows me to take all of them into the woods a day at a time to get their shot at a deer. I spend all my time guiding and teaching them and 2 other hunters that just started hunting and their in their mid thirties. Maybe all the idiots your referring to didn't have the opportunity of having someone show them the way.

I love the early muzzleloader season, but they moved it a week later this year, so I don`t get to go up to 2F for the week :-[ I  love the Tidioute area with some friends. Looks like the 2 saturdays for me in 2A and 2B. Sometimes it just doesn`t work out ;D

They have to do something to get a license increase from the politions.  It is a shame that adults are acting like children.  No deer no increase.  They don't care if the game comm. goes belly up, just give me a deer.  I think this is something they put out there until the April meeting to see what the hunters have to say.

i think they need to fix the stinken game units
god i used to hunt in beaver i walked 30 years in different directions i was in 3 different units..
same with westmoreland county
guys would go down alleghen county an get 20 doe tags an go on a brown its down killen spree

and i still think semi's for deer is Crazy!! i have less of a chance hurting some one with my TC pistol then these guys running around with semi slug guns... thers no plugs in this with shell extensions heck you can go in the woods with a semi with 12 slugs an fire as fast as you can handle the gun...
thats one of the reasions i gave up hunting in allegheny county i cant hunt with a 41 super black hawk an take a 50 yard shot
but my buddy can go running around in  with a 11-87 fully rifled gun with a red dote and have 12 rounds of 3 inch hornady SST bullets an go off like rambo on any thing lol

im very happy they started to let people hunt with gun mounted lights though i might start up coon hunting again it was fun..
i heard some thing about baiting all so for like yoks an such too not too sure about it

Hi , could you point me to this rule of using semi shotguns for deer hunting in Pa,. I know semi scatterguns are lawful for small game and waterfowl but this is news to me and I would like to take alook at this if you wouldn't mind , another thing , could you find out what mag extension your friend has that allows his 11-87 to hold 12 rds of 3 inch mags , because frankly I got to see one of these

Special Regulations Areas: (All of Allegheny County in western
Pennsylvania and all of Bucks, Chester, Delaware, Montgomery
and Philadelphia counties in the southeast): Muzzleloading long
guns 44-caliber or larger, bows and arrows, manual or autoloading
shotguns .410 or larger using slugs and 20-gauge or larger using
buckshot. Buckshot may not be used in Allegheny County. Only
bows and arrows are permitted in Philadelphia County. Crossbows
with a draw weight of at least 125 pounds, but not more than 200
pounds, may be used during the regular firearms deer seasons,
including the antlerless deer season Dec. 26-Jan. 26 in WMU 2B &
Dec. 10-22 & Dec. 26-Jan. 26 in WMUs 5C & 5D

Muzzleloading long
guns 44-caliber or larger, bows and arrows, manual or autoloading
shotguns .410 or larger using slugs and 20-gauge or larger using
buckshot. Buckshot may not be used in Allegheny County.

Firearms - Magazine Capacity: It is unlawful to hunt small
game, furbearers, turkeys, waterfowl or crows with a manual or autoloading
shotgun unless the magazine is limited to a two-shell capacity. A plug
must be a one-piece filler installed so

Magazine Capacity: It is unlawful to hunt small

Hello again and thanks , one more thing , do you know roughly if not exactly how many years this has been in effect?
If this is relatively new , is their any talk of this being "the foot in the door" for use of semi's allowed in the deer woods threw the rest of the state?

my friends have been doing it for heck i could be wrong sence its been so long at least 10-12 years easly..

but thers been talk back an forth about maken lots of places in PA shotgun only... once that happens they are considered special regs area.. so that would take effect ther when it happens.... like thers back an forth BS about all of 2B going to shotgun only... soon as that happens you can run around in parts of beaver,armstorng,westmoreland.. counts with one...
i found the old paper for how much i payed for that extension... it was 170 afew years ago

$170 for the extension a few years ago? wow , any idea on the maker?
10 to 12 years is certainly a good bit of time , now not too long ago I read somewhere of people doing tests to prove that shotgun slugs really are not that much safer as they travel and/or ricochet as far as many centerfires. Some claimed this would open the door to allow rilfes into shotgun only areas and others claim it would only further restrict what you would be able to use , "who knows". The trouble as I see it is , they just are not making land anymore , and with homes and walmarts going up everywhere the hunting grounds will continue to shrink.
I am in my late 30's and while that is not alot of time on this planet , I have personally already lost alot of hunting grounds and figure this will only continue but now that the housing market is in the ditch perhaps it will slow down some , granted that sucks if you build homes for a living, but someone always gets the short end of the stick.

yeah i was dumb back then and was all like ""TAtical"" an such lol
so now my uncle has it for the most part..

well its not the fact that you can have a flyer like any thing else miss the target and it keeps going till its stops...
im talking about these people empty the gun as fast as they can   thats were i think its really bad
now that you can use a muzzle loading hand gun in allegheny i might go a few times or take the 410

guns get emptied pretty quick around here even for bolts/levers/and pumps not sure a semi would give them much more advantage , it would be nice tho to use an m1 or the likes for taking a deer

Many in Pennsylvania seem to have the attitude that if you pick up a semi-auto you will empty it as fast as you can at an animal. I don’t believe it matters what type of firearm someone hunts with, a slob is a slob, and someone who waits for an ethical shot will do so no matter what type of firearm they are using.

My feelings exactly.  When it comes to deer I have pretty much gone ML only anyway, but would like the option of a 10/22 for small game and a ar for varmints

Ya know, I never realized you could use a semi-auto shotgun in Allegheny county. Not that it matters to me, but I certainly find that interesting. And today, with shotgun "rounds" effective out to 200 yards it doesn't seem possible that the commission is looking at the current technology of ammo.
