.25 Remington Model 14

One of these little dandies just turned up locally - had a great uncle who used to shoot deer with his .25 REM Model 8 a few years back.  Any one care to share ballistics, comparisons to more recent calibers, ammo availability, and that kind of stuff?  Rifle has original wheel site, with some wood repairs - has been reblued - and it's PROBABLY too far gone as a collector.  aSKING $400.  Might make a nice Walkin' rifle though...

The 25 Rem and 25/35 are sweet little rounds, very mild recoil and good accuracy. As for a "walkin' rifle" the one drawback to the  M-14 Rem pump is its weight. It is all finely machined steel and a pleasure to behold but steel is heavy, my m-141 in .35 Rem goes 9 pounds with scope.

Ammunition maybe a tough to obtain for the .25 Remington.  I do not believe I have ever seen it on the shelve in a sporting goods store.  I am amazed that Midway has some cases, and it is being closed out.  I would jump on it. http://www.midwayusa.com/ebrowse.exe/browse?TabID=1&Categoryid=10229&categorystring=9315***652***670***9013***

 I expect that cases can be made from .30 Remington cases.  .30 Remington cases can be found at http://www.huntingtons.com/cases_remington.html

RCBS .25 Remington dies are a special order item and huntingtons list them.  I believe it takes a #19 shell holder.

My 42 Edition of the Lyman Manual uses the same reloading data for .25 Remington and the 25-35 Winchester.  My current Hornady manual shows 25-35 loads using their 117-grain bullet. http://www.midsouthshooterssupply.com/item.asp?sku=000032550

As a kid I hunted deer part of a season with a 25-35 Winchester.  Fun to shoot but I consider it a bare minimum for deer at short range.  I had Winchester 117 grain Super-X ammunition for the 25-35. 

 
I think it would be a doable reloading task, and a fun adventure.
