Trick or Treat for Alex
« on: November 03, 2007, 06:10:45 PM »
Halloween, Alex and his dad came knocking on my hunting camp door.
Well his treat was a new 7mm-08 Stevens. The excitement was great.
My young friend very much liked the rifle. His grand mother who hates guns
will be cursing me. Do I really care? I hope to be able in as few years to take Alex hunting, but I am fast running out of time and get up and go.
Tomorow is another year gone by.

I got a nice 6 point buck yesterday but no luck yet on a doe for which I have a tag in a zone I don't know too well. But a good game plan I constructed during the last three days  I hope will reward me with a doe.

Happy Birthday, keep giving us the good word (and helping me out when I have magazine springs upside down).

I wasn't sure how to say Happy Birthday in Canadian so I had to look it up.
Bonne Fete! (I hope that's right!) I'm sure Fred will let me know if it's not.
Anyway, Happy Birthday Fred.

Great job on continuing a tradition.

To all of you!
Thank you for the  birthday well wishes. I spend my day cutting up and wrapping the meat for the freezer. BTW the buck is an 8 pointer,it is a wonder
I hit the buck when I can't tell the difference between a six and eight pointer.
I think it is a sign of age, ha?

Hey Fred, happy birthday buddy, sorry if I am late but here on the Cape (Cape Cod)we have been without power for the last 26 or so hours. It has put a crimp into my plans to get up to my camp in Maine also, a lot of clean up around the house today after the winds and rain stopped. Tropical storm Noel was not to good to us, anyway we are back up and running and all the best to you my Canadian friend....<><....:)

Eh Tim, let me see now.
Had trouble wi the the 7x57, forgot to install the
sling swivel stud. Carrying the rifle in one hand and trying to use the binocs
with the other did not work too well. The 375 Win is for the the tree stand up north at the end of Nov.

So I used the 257 R  #1 with 100gr Nosl Partition a very deadly rig. Besides
the 6x HBR scope on the 7x57 has too little FOV and the reticle is too fine.
I thought I might get by, but out in the field things are not the same as on the range.

Hit the deer at the junction of the head and neck, only spoiled 25% of the neck roast. Bullet destroyed the vertebra and went out the other side.

I am going to make new brass for the 257 R Handi next week and take it for the WT doe using 100gr Speer Hot Core. The old brass is not trustworthy any
more. The Handi 257 is much easier to carry.
