Mossberg's Silver Reserve
« on: October 15, 2007, 05:29:27 PM »
 :)
Stopped in the Sporting Department in Wall-Mart today to look at some O/U Shotguns.   All they had on hand was a Mossberg Silver Reserve 12GA.   Didn't know they made O/U's,  so was curious and wanted to look it over.    It looked more expensive than a below $500 gun.   Had a great feel to it.    The engraved side plate with gold inlaid flying fowl looks terrific.   And the wood to metal finish is very good.   No more shooting than I do,  I'm thinking about ordering one in a .410.  I've looked at everything from Beretta, Browning, DeHaan, Franchi, etc., and one of those would stretch my budget just a tad more than I could justify it setting in the gun locker.    I know they've had some issues with these guns, but it's weight and design sure is appealing.

My friend Barry up in PA bought one in 20 gauge on my recommendation as they look and feel really nice. His doubled on him most every shot from day one. He finally got tired of it and traded it on a CZ Huglu and has been a happy camper since.

So far no one has brought one to our skeet range so that's really all the experience I have on them. They do look and feel good but apparently might not function so good.

Most reports on Turkish doubles haven't been all that good---I'd save up for something better if you want a double.

If you're just looking to spend $500---consider the Beretta auto that's most likely sitting right next door to that Mossberg in the Walmart case.

They are getting mixed reviews, some quite favorable. The problem with low-end equipment is that it's always a crap shoot. So if you've got $500 to gamble, go for it.

Personally I can't afford to risk buying cheap equipment because of all the expense and trouble it typically causes, so I find out what's good at a price I can find a way to pay, pay the money, and live happily with the results. I can't think of a single instance of where I bought a cheap piece of hunting, fishing, or shooting equipment that I didn't regret later.

Going rate for a good O/U is about $1500 new. Some used ones are less. If you really want an O/U, save up and get a good one. You won't regret it.

Well; I'm definitely wanting an O/U.   Went back to Wal-Mart and put in my order, but their warehouse is out of stock on the .410.   Checked with another dealer that sells them and they were out also.    Took to the Internet at Able's Ammo, and they too are out of stock.   Wal-Mart said to check with them next week.  Don't have much choice if I want to keep the wife happy.   She doesn't see things the way I do.  I was only looking over a Browning White Lightning Citori, and she kept clearing her throat, so I laid it down.

I have the Citori White Lightnings in 20, 28 and .410. I can highly recommend them to you.

I bought a stoeger condor about 2 months ago. I have been very happy with the way the gun feels and shoots. Kind of plain jane and comes with only a modified and an improved cylinder choke. interchangeable with mossberg chokes so i bought a full choke for trap. comes with a solid walnut stock so I dressed it up a bit and finished the fitting process so it would look better on the gun and fit me better as well. Patterns very nice. no holes even shot dispersment and hits were i want it to. for 400 bucks it's the best value I've found. I've outshot a-lot of guys with much nicer shotguns.

My buddy the trap shooter has several fine guns, including a Citori and a couple of Berettas. His favorite is an IZH shotgun from Russia because he shoots it best. It's not a handsome gun, and I don't know how they managed to make it as heavy as it its, but if he likes it and it works well for him, then that's what matters.

My .410 Silver Reserve heard my calling and is coming in !!     Will post a pic of it when it does.  Found a Dealer with a distributor from back east.
In the meantime I checked out the Manufacturer for Mossberg International who have been gaining recognition in the shotgun world since they've started in 1985.  Here's some of their product line.

My little Mossberg Silver Reserve is here.   I gave it a good cleaning and took it out for some shooting.   At this point I'm very happy with it.   It's a straight shooter.   The barrels on this .410 are 26", and both choked to modified.  It weighs in at 6 lbs., and with 2 1/2" shells, I never paid any attention to recoil.  Great little gun.

Had to get it out of the sun, that silver receiver is bright.
