I've been shooting 700's for 30+ years, and was an dyed in the wool 700 fan.  In the last ten years or so, I've gotten heavily into stainless Model 70 Classics, and have had extremely good luck with them.  I do prefer a Model 70 Classic for a hunting rifle which will be carried in "the mud and the blood and the beer".  I still have many of my older 700's and have no intention of parting with them.  Having said all that, my lastest centerfire hunting rifle purchase was a 700 CDL SF .264WM!  So, I am not married to any brand, specifically.  Altho, if you took all of my Model 70's and 700's away, I wouldn't be able to go hunting.!!  I don't own Rugers, Weatherbys, Tikkas, Sakos, etc.  I've tried many other brands, but they didn't stay, for a variety of reasons.  Once I find something I like, I stick with it!  Also,I've been married to the same old woman for nearly 35 years!!  Why switch when you like what you've got?

Having said all that, my heavy barrel prairie dog shooters remain 700's or 40X's.  I firmly believe the Model 70 PF and CRPF rifles would serve me just as well, but have no reason to change right now.

Ruger M-77, tang safety...I prefer a tang safety, to me its in the right location and it makes it easier to get to for either left hand shooting or right hand shooting, so you can shoot from either shoulder, also with a Ruger the rings come with it and you can check each screw, no need to remove the rings to check bases, they are made together.....

I, too, am an old style Ruger fan.  I have several in .30-06, .280 Rem, .243 international, .35 Whelan, and 22-250.  All shoot inside a minute of angle.  Nothing I've shot including moose, black bear, brown bear, elk, over 100 deer and 50 caribou, goat, misc varmints have treveled farther than 100' from where they were hit.  I use the proper bullets for the game I'm seeking and get as close as possible before shooting.  That's why they call it hunting.  The shotgun style safety is ideally place for hunting big bruins in the dense undergrowth of Alaska's temperate rain forest and substantially faster when having to shoulder the rifle immediately.  The only fault I find in the action is that it is not controlled feed but the magazine design does not permit a round to fall out of the action even loaded upside down, so this is not a concern, just a whim.
Greg lost his battle with cancer last week on April 2nd 2009. RIP Greg. We miss you.
