Which american vehicles are catching up with the Jap jobs.

I looked at Edmunds.  The 04 F-150 4x4 lariat was rated good.

I also looked at diesel Jeep Liberty.  They rated good.  Would a jeep diesel be any good?

Any of the big three, they all make quality vehicles.  I personally think the Chevrolet is  the better one, then Ford, and Dodge.  There are many factors to weigh, but I base my opinion solely on body integrity.  This has been one of the major advantages of the foreign vehicles.  It is kinda funny, when the Japanese vehicles first hit American soil they weren't much more than a sardine can with wheels, after a few years they were making better vehicles than the American products,  today many automobile companies set their standards on the Lexus (A part of Toyota) and are using a better quality control to ensure a better vehicle.

Toyota and Nissan continue to build very good trucks, but American is catching up fast, go to the April issue of "Consumer Reports" and read the reliability information on all of them and I think you will agree.

While in the business, I challenged a potential new car/truck buyer to go drive every used vehicle he could find that was three years old, or older,  and compare the different makers from that point of view.  This is about the point when things start to fail, of course, use, and preventive maintenance play a big role in how well a vehicle holds up too, but it does provide a starting point to measure the vehicle's reliability and integrity.

I can tell you a 2007 Toyota Tundra with a 5.7L. will out pull a Chevy or Ford, will stop better with a full load towing. Drive a 5.7L. Tundra & find out for yourself what you're missing. A big plus is the Toyota's don't spend alot of time in the shop for repairs (unless you neglect them real bad).

The thing that turned me away from the Toyota and the Nissan was money period.  In reality, they do have their problems too just like any other vehicle.  My brothers Tocoma can't keep brakes or rotors on it.  They are good trucks in all,  although I think some of the Toyota stuff is hype just like the Dodge Hemi. The  11,000 lbs Toyota advertises behind a 1/2 ton frame is nuts, I don't care what make it is.  My hemi ram does not feel any stronger than my old 360 did with a load although it was advertised as being one bad rig. Toyota and Nissan offer no rebates/incentives that I found.  I was quoted almost $32,000 for a Nissan and almost $40,000 for a 4wd Toyota with 4wd and all the gadgets.  For that, I could buy a new diesel.  Instead, I bought a used Dodge and so far so good, Toyota can keep the $700 a month truck payments.

I'm with ya on this one, Not just Toyota but all the manufacturers are making wild outlandish towing capacity claims. 5 tons behind a half ton truck is a STUNT! plain and simple I don't care what the advertisement says, Is it gonna take insurance company's intervention to reign in on some of the INSANITY that's currently going on in the .5 ton truck market. Remember it was largely the insurance company's that put the kibosh on the muscle car thing.

another thing what's the ^$(^$ deal with tailgates on new trucks being a minimum 5' off the ground. It's getting to the point where you'll need to construct a loading dock to load anything into your truck. It's gotten so bad ford has started installing ladders inside their tailgates

Excluding the Dodge neither do other trucks, Toyota's are good but it's not like they are the only ones who've figured out how to make a good truck.

goodwrench, I have to agree with you on the old Chevy.  My 72 that I purchased new is still going strong, she rides and drives good.  At one point I set out to restore her to original condition, but as the result of an accident,  I was discouraged and turned it into my farm truck.  I don't know how many miles this old truck has on it, the speedometer has been around several times.  I rebuilt the motor and transmission in 1988, but other than that have not had to do any major repairs..  It looks like dog poop, but if I really needed to,  I wouldn't hesitate to jump in and drive from coast to coast, I have no doubt that she would get me there and back home.  She is a little expensive to operate (gas), but doesn't take a back seat to the new ones, most of them that have tried know what her tail lights look like................
