Author Topic: Don't understand these Encore Scope Mounts! (Read 1227 times)

Have a 25/06 HB with a Weaver base on it right now. The Base sticks out over the taper on the barrel and looks like a tuning fork. I would not think this would be good on the scope, looks like it would vibrate a lot.

Looked at the Burris Dual Dovetail Carbine since I am a big fan of the dual dovetail. This base is so short that the turret would be up against the front ring to get the proper eye relief with my scope. With a 3-9 Vari XII, that is alot of scope hanging out in front of the front ring. That makes me wonder if that is a good setup.

Looks like things would be better if T/C did not start that taper so quickly.

What mounts do you all use and what kind of luck have you had with them.

When I installed the base I filled underneath with epoxy with a little black dye from an old glass bedding kit. Much more solid, but still a very sucky set-up for an so-called top of the line rifle. If you do decide to use the dual dove tail ste-up , you can buy rings with an off-set, just look at the burris web site. I think it is 1/2 inch. I tried last week to mount a 6X16 scope on my 22-250. Because of the funky scope mounting system, I ran out of elevation before I could get to zero, guess I'll have to buy more rings, the Burris posi-line ones with the plastic shims. These guns are highly over-rated, especially for accuracy. I could have had two good shooting rifles for the money I've sunk into a mediocre one and an extra barrel.

Highly over-rated.......You said it all of their guns are crap.My Encores only group 1/2" to 1" groups @ 100 yards and that's from a factory 15" '06 pistol

Oh...ya I forgot to tell you hyltoto 99.9% of the time if an Encore won't shoot accurate it's a forend problem and a trigger job

My encore wont shoot either , I have tried 3 differint loads and The best it did was 5 shots at 100 yards went .4

Its not always the trigger or forend that could be the problem with the accuracy. I have had two barrels from T/C that were defected. You got to check out everything. :wink:

True....you must check out everthing.My '06 barrel could not group any better than 3" at 50 yards when I first got it.I tried every load combo I could think of and it was no good.I thought it was the barrel called T/C and crabed at them telling them they should refund all my money! I told them I would stand a better chance throwing the gun at an animal and killing it,than shooting at it.

I found out it only needed a trigger job and some forend work.Now the '06 will shoot just about any load 1.5" or better.

Well thanks for all the help. Still not sure about the scope rings, but I guess it has been decided that Encores are good guns, even though that was not the question.

Bullseye, I use the Leupold QR base and rings. Fit is a little better than with the Weaver but still not perfect. The mounts do their job though as the rifle groups very well. You might check out the Virgin Valley bases at MidwayUSA (or at Virgin Valley). They use a 6 hole base that also fits the standard 4 holes. Looks to me like it might provide a bit more flexibility but I've not seen one live and in person.

You might also want to check out Warne's Maxima bases and rings. I have one on a standard taper barrel - it does have that overhang you're talking about, but it's not real pronounced. I don't think it looks odd at all. Plus, these bases are heavy steel - strong and pricey, but I believe worth it.

Thanks for the info all. I did some research and ordered a Burris Carbine Dual Dovetail Mount. Hopefully I can get the scope set where it needs to be without an offset ring.

Now to fix my 209X50. The Weaver base I put on the 25/06 was on my muzzleloader barrel (by the way the muzzleloader barrels do not have near the taper and the weavers fit them pretty good) and when I removed it the blueing was gone around all four screw holes. I am going go leave the open sights on it so some touch up is required. It made me sick when I saw it.

By the way PJ and others, this 25/06 shoots some good groups without any load development yet. My 209x50 will shoot groups unlike any muzzleloader I have ever had. I guess I have been lucky, I have never had any fore end problems. I agree the Encores are good guns in my opinion, other than they need to not taper that barrel so soon.

Bullseye that happened with me and my .45 cal. barrel I put some loktite in the holes for the baseplate screws and when I took the base plate off the loktite took the blueing off made me sick to.

I just purchased 2 different mount and ring setups. The first one is a Talley w/ quick release rings. The other is a Leupold w/quick release rings. The Talley bridges back over the top of the receiver. There is plenty of room for the rings leaving a 1/2" between the scope adjustment turrets. The scope is a Leupold vari xIII 3.5x10.

The Leupold base hangs out in the air over the barrel taper like you describe. There is no room to slide the scope back any further as it is up against the turrets. The scope is a Bushnell 3200 firefly 3x9.

From all I have heard and tried I will likely buy Talleys from now on. The cost is high but it is a quality setup. The cost is $37.95 for the encore base and $66.10 for fixed rings, $79.50 for QR with screw lock, or $99.50 for QR w/lever lock. :eek: :shock:
