Pics of Talleys on a Sako 75
« on: April 25, 2007, 04:29:34 AM »
I think I found my new favorite scope mount for a Sako 75. I just put these Talleys on this past weekend and really like the way they look. Only time will tell how they hold up. I've had nothing but good luck with them on other rifles.

They look nice, although I tend to prefer stainless mounts on a stainless rifle.

I like the scope too.  Isn't that a Conquest 3x-9x-40mm?

Stainless would have been nice, but I can easily live with these as long as they're solid and they seem to be.

Yes, that's a 3-9x40 Conquest. I'm thinking about replacing it with something else, though. I've never owned a Schmidt & Bender and am thinking about buying one for this rifle. The only drawback to the S & B as I see it is the weight and, of course, the cost.

Thanks Rev. I hope to get out soon and do some shooting with this new setup. Hard to right now with my son playing baseball every weekend.

Daniel,

You are going to love that Conquest.  I have that exact same scope and it is awesome!  On this particular model, you have a full 4" of CONSTANT eye relief, which is great to have!

As for the S&B, yes, they are great scopes too - among the "elite" class of scopes.  However, dollar for dollar, I really can't justify the price.  In other words, and just for example purposes, while the S&B may be 25% better, it's 500% price increase is not justified.

The Conquest 3x-9x-40mm is probably one of the few scopes that I can say are, IMHO, underpriced for the quality they have.  The only other scope that I feel is also underpriced is the Nikon Monarch and newer Nikon Buckmaster.  The Elite 4200s and 3200s are priced just right, while the Leupolds - all lines, are mildly over priced.  Then you have the Swarovskis, Zeiss V series, and S&B that are just way out of wack.

I think that I just created a new issue.  I'm going to make a new post out of this. :)

Yea, the 3-9x40 Conquest is an excellent scope and is a real bargain at the price it's sold for. I've had the one in the picture since 2001 and have owned 3 others. If this rifle shoots really well with this scope and those Talley mounts, I might just forget about the S & B.

To give you a little history on that particular Conquest, I bought in May of 2001. In fact, I had it on order before Zeiss had even delivered their first Conquest to dealers. I mounted it on that same Sako, except back then it was a .300 Weatherby. I fired probably 800 to 1000 rounds through that rifle with that scope atop it and then I decided to have the rifle rebarreled. It's now a .300 Winchester. Last fall I suspected a problem with the scope so I sent it to Zeiss for service. They kept it for 8 weeks (I think they sent it to Germany) and apparently replaced the errector assembly. It seems to be as good as new and I look forward to using it more in the coming years.

I have the fixed rings but mine only have 1 screw on top and bottom. Do you happen to remember the stock number?

No I don't, but the fixed rings as well as the quick detach ones, which I have, both will fit the same bases. All you need to know is what height you need. I own both kinds and of the two I think I like the quick detach better.

I've been looking for a set of Talleys to put on my Tikka. Found them at a couple of places that are the screw-down type, but none that fit the dovetail. Where did you get yours?

I bought mine directly from Talley. Give them a call (you can look up their number on the Internet) and see what they've got for your Tikka.

Appreciate it, but I got impatient and ordered some Warne's from Midway. Another Tikka is in the works though, and depending on how the Warnes work out, I might give Talley a call. thanks again..
