Here's a question that I think I know the answere to but would like to see what you all think:

If you had to hunt exclusively with your Contender , and you only had three barrels to change, what three would they be if you wanted the versatility to hunt any game/season?

Any takers on that question? :-)

Three Calibers

1.  223 Remington
2.  6.5 JDJ
3.  375 JDJ

If you're using a Contender and you can't successfully match one of these calibers to the intended game, you probably can't kill it (or shouldn't be trying)!

Great selection Jav - I'll go a little different and just say...

1. 375 JDJ
2. 375 JDJ
3. 375 JDJ

If you can't kill it with one of these, you shouldn't be shooting at it!    :)

Now to be more on the serious side, if I could only take 3 of my barrels along, I'd go with...

1. 17 Ackley Hornet
2. 6X47
3. 375 JDJ

...for everything from diggers to elephants, but I doubt I'd leave the Hummers, 257 JDJ, 6.5 Super Bower or 309 JDJ home either - hmmm, maybe I better also toss in the 22LR Match, 221FB's, 222, ....

Since this is the Contender rifle forum I'll assume we're talking the Contender Carbine.  I don't hunt anything larger than deer so my choices would be:
1. 410 shotgun
2. 22 LR
3. 7-30 Waters

Contender or Encore

I think it's unanimous for the bores but a little differnt for frames.
Contender
1. 222/223
2. 6.5jdj/7x30waters
3. 375jdj/45-70

Encore
1. 223
2. 270/308/30'06
3. 35 Whelen/375-06jdj/.444 Marlin/45-70

I can't choose just three!!!!!!--but the Contender would be easier! I could absolutely live with any of them in each category.

Hey Ladobe,

I wanted to mention my 17 AH too - it's sure hard to leave it out of any list!  What a great little cartridge!  Fred at Bullberry will never get mine back from me, that's for sure!

Let's make this a four-gun list and I'll add my 17 Ackley Hornet!   :-D

I'm putting together an Encore 3 barrel rifle "battery" now:

1. 24" 20 ga. rifled slug barrel for shotgun only deer hunting
2. 24" 223 for varmints
3. 24" 30/06 for everything else

I'd add a 209X50 barrel if I didn't already have a TC Thunderhawk.

If your talking Encore I would pick 3 that I do not own. They would be

1 .223
2 30-o6
3. .375  or 20 gauge

I tend to pick cartridges that are less common place than these for my own use, .222, 250 Sav, .338-06, but if I could only have 3 these would allow me to handload up and down for anything. I have an old Savage 219 with several barrels, Hornet, 30-30, 410, 20 and 12 gauge and it comes pretty close to being an all around gun. It is interesting that this old idea is coming around again.
