.243 encore recoil
« on: February 22, 2007, 07:04:26 AM »
Just wondering if anyone had this caliber in an encore and what the recoil was like.  Say maybe compaired to a 44 mag or 357mag.  Also, what kind of accuracy are you getting out of this setup.  Any help will be appreciated.

According to the math, recoil is comparable to a med range .44mag load, 280g @1300fps gives about 16ft.lbs. of recoil.
With 100g bullets in the .243, and a max charge for 2600fps, you'll feel 16 ft.lbs. These figures are WITHOUT a scope.
Factor in the extra LB for the scope and mounts, less than "max" loads for 2500fps., and recoil is down to 12ft.lbs.

I have the .243 15" Encore barrel that I shoot with a 2x6 power scope. Recoil is not a problem especially with 80gr. bullets (not bad with 100 gr. either).  It groups as well as I can shoot it...typically 1" at 100 yds. from a bench. I also have a large frame Dan Wesson .357 Mag. w/ 6" barrel that I've taken deer with.  Because of the weight and balance of the Encore, the felt recoil for me is very similar to my DW.  I think you'd like shooting the .243 if you've shot the other calibers.  Wear ear protection when you shoot these short barrels since the noise is worse than the recoil in the light calibers.

I have been working with a buddies 15" .243 Winchester T/C Encore. With it's perferred Handloads 100 yard 5 shot groups from the bench have been around 3/4". The Factory Ammo I tried hasn't faired so well with most 5 shot 100 yard groups from the bench being around 1 1/2" to 2".

As per the recoil it is not bad at all. I guess I would say the recoil would be between that of a .357 Magnum and a .44 Magnum. Muzzle Blast, depending on the powder used can be quite considerable.

In this particular barrel the preferred load uses 80gr. Speer Hot Core Spitzers loaded with H-4895. Average Muzzle Velocity is 2920 FPS with low extreme spreads and standard deviation. On January 1st I had the good fortune to harvest 2 Whitetail Does with this Handgun & Load. Bullet performance was quite good and I was very satisfied with the results.
