30-40 Krag conversion

I'm thinking about getting a 30-30 (handi) and having it rechambered to 30-40 Krag. It occurs to me that I saw a post or two about this. Has anybody done it? How did it work out?

Has worked well several times for me. Here is my latest, a rechambered early SB2. I went with it so I could take advantage of the pre-micro groove rifling, since I like to play with cast sometimes.

Nice rifle. Is a rechambering all that is required? From the info that I have the rate of twist is the same (10"). Seems to me it would be a good caliber for moose. Thanks.

That is the "blonde laminate stock not many were made.

Yep, those are the stocks I got from you. When Carol's 7x57 project didn't work out I put them aside until this project came along. After you and I dealt on this stock set, another GBO member sent me another pair which I haven't found a use for yet. But the ones here have the best definition between the laminates.

Yep. Just rechamber, clean, and shoot. Even uses the same extrator. Could not be easier.

 Great.  Who does it?  The two gunsmiths I asked about it were charging around $100 plus shipping.  May as well buy a .308 barrel as do that.

I'm going to check with a couple of gunsmiths tomorrow, a (knowledgeable) friend of mine thinks we could do the job by hand reaming the chamber... I'm starting to get a little jazzed about this project.

Yep. $100.00 seems to be the going price around here too.

If you just want a 30 cal, the 308 will out perform it. But if you just want performance, why not get the 30-06? And a Tikka in 300 Win will out perform them all. But, be warned, you then will not have a 30-40 Krag!! ::)

Sorry I missed your question earlier. I wasn't ignoring it on purpose.

The blond stock sets were offered by NEF for a short period some time ago. I saw a set at a local gun show and asked on the Classified Section if someone had any they wanted to sell or trade. I got my first set from cheatermk3 and then another set came available. Since I had forgoten to cancel my add, I took them too. Many shooters don't like them, but I like anything different. They are in my group I call my "Three Amigos."

The Three Amigos (30-40, 25-06, & 45-70)

I too have been thinking about 30-40US.  Its one of the cartridges Id like to see added into the lineup, along with 9.3x 74 (Id even accept 9.3x63) AND 303Brit.

Good luck with your conversion.  For me the building is as much fun as the shooting.  Im currently waiting for my 45-120 Buffalo Classic to arrive.  Ive added a 30 inch brass scope and had the barrel lever "rolled over" into more of a side lever design and changed the trigger guard into a larger "schutzen" style. 

Soooo, get excited about your 30-40 conversion.  Do what you want.  Seems to me Fred had a heavy barrel turned into a octagon in one of his specials. 

In my mind 30-40 is a great cartridge thats still available in most gunshops and fits into the catagory of unique.  Its not something your buddies will show up with in camp, but its clearly a killer down rang without being too hard on your shoulder.

GO FOR IT
