NOT LOOKING BACK
« on: December 02, 2006, 05:42:10 PM »
11 months ago i bought a new NEF ultra in 223.since then i have tried every trick on the internet,8 different factory loads, close to 100 different handloads,3 different scopes,2 different stock/forearm sets, virtually any and everything.btw- i'm no stranger to firearms.
the very best that the rifle would do was 3" @ 50---yes 50 yds. finally, i had had enough.i traded for a new T/C Encore 22-250,24" blued bbl and black composite stock. today it shot under 3/4" @ 100 yds with winchester white box 45 gr.jhp. hoorah, just wait til i get some reloads worked up.

all i can say is: FREE AT LAST,FREE AT LAST, THANK GOD I'M NEF FREE AT LAST!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Not that it makes much difference now, but what happened to the tight 5-shot groups you were shooting in February? You didn't mention that it was a problem in April, either!

after much hand-ringing and walking & talking to myself,i finally found a load that my 223 ultra excels with. all loads that i previously tried shot 3" or worse @ 100 yds, with major vertical stringing. but no more.
my new pet load is;    28.0 grs of AA2230 behind a hornady 50 gr V-max and a CCI 450 magnum primer. several 5 shot groups-all bullets touching in each group and no vertical stringing.
look out song-dogs,here i come.

mine done the same thing.i finally had to switch to hornady 50 gr. v-maxes. mine likes 28 gr. of aa-2230 and a cci small rifle magnum primer. this load seems to be a contradiction in terms, but it works. btw, my ultra is the 1:9 twist.
good luck,dennis

the gun did shoot great for about 5 boxes, then the accuacy went sour.its as if the barrel was shot out. i was very disappointed overall in this gun.the fit,the finish, the accuracy-you name it.tweaking and fine tuning is ok but i would rather not spend that much time tinkering on a rifle.i'd rather spend it hunting or shooting more accurately.judging by the nef forums-its rare to take one out of the box and get any kind of decent service.to me ,nef is the yugo of guns.

You can't shoot out the barrel on any gun in that few rounds. You can however copper foul it up so badly it will need to be cleaned. You'll certainly find that the case with any rifle.

I have several Handi's that do the same thing. They will shoot very good for awhile then they shoot all over the place for awhile and then back to shooting good. That's why I carry my bolt gun's on all the serious hunts. But for everyday hog hunts in the eve.,it's the 280 that get's carried.   Digger

GB, i know the barrel was not shot out,but it wasn't copper fouled either.the gun had no rhyme or reason to it.

Ya Know....there was a time when H&R's QC wasn't the greatest...but since the current manangement team has taken over...it has been becoming one of the greatest going for gun manufacture's...I've owned a bunch of Handi rifles...not as many as say Quickdtoo...or a few others...but enough of them to see just how far they have come over the years...and will continue owning them for a long time...they are to me a very good investment for the money spent...

Now...if yours shoots good one day...and lousy the next...What have you done to ensure it isn't you and not the rifle...? Have you checked everything...that can be checked?...I don't know too many people that are perfect shots everyday under every condition that can effect their accuracy...I do know folks who can shoot very good everyday...but not perfectly...We are all humans...not machines...

Since you are handloading for your 223...many things can and will effect accuracy...Different lots of powders/primers/bullets/cases...each can ruin groups from 1 batch to the next...and these are just for your components...not on how you did your handloading...

Many things on your rifle can effect accuracy as well...so to your shooting technique...

Calling the Handi's the Yugo's of rifles is a slap in the face to them...and to us who enjoy these rifles...The Yugo was plaqued with problems before they ever got them off the line...Most here know full well how good these little rifles are...Sure many have had problems...but many masny more haven't...and are more than pleased with the accuracy and reliability they get from them...

A-lot of new posters come here to complain about certain problems they are having...and most will get the answers they need in a timely fashion...for those who don't...they are quickly refered to the Customer Support service NEF has in place...

If your rifle shoots good one day and not the next...most likely the problem isn't the rifle itself provided you have done all you can like floating the barrel...or unfloating it by bedding it properly...Cleaning it good as GB has said...consistanly pulling thru on the trigger......but is probably your scope...your ammo..or your shooting style...

So before you call a Handi rifle a Yugo...make sure you've done what has been posted  to help eliviate most problems with them...There are just way too many things that effect accuracy to do otherwise...

Sealer,

I've never owned a TC Encore or Contender or anything else TC makes - just didn't want any of it.

But, if you have problems with it, could you post it for sell in the Handi Rifle classifieds?  If the price was cheap enough, I might want to venture into TC country.  So far, I've gotten plenty of satisfaction from my Handi's, but I'm always looking for something new to play with.

I remember the S&W 622 .22 auto pistol I picked up cheap ($160) after the owner said it wouldn't keep a bullet on a paper plate at 10 yards.  The nut on the end of the barrel came loose.   :o  A spanner made from a penny & lock-tite fixed that gem.

If your hammer breaks on you Encore, you can get the new style hammer for it as well.  They also have other help items on the TC forum as well.  Hope this helps  ;)

Kind of hard sell to come here & tell us you won't have any problems with "xx" brand gun, and all other brand "xx" guns are junk - internet makes it way to obviously simple to find cures/answers/problems.
