7mm BR for mule deer?
« on: November 17, 2006, 02:43:17 AM »
I found a Rem custom shop Model 7 in 7mm BR.  The rifle and scope package weigh 6-1/2 lbs.  I am thinking it would be a good centefire rifle to start my kids off deer hunting with.  Has anyone used the 7mm BR on mule deer?  I know it's not much more then a 200 yard cartridge in this application, but I'm going to have to get them closer than that anyway.  Thoughts?
Regards,

Tom

It's been used effectively for that application for a lot of years. Never very popular, but effective with the right bullet.

I have a Lone Eagle in 7mm BR. Never shot a Mulie but I did take an Antelope at about 75 yds with it. Lung shot, it ran about 25 - 30 yds and stopped.

At 100 yds the Lone Eagle will put 3 shots close enough together to cover with a quarter but I limit my hunting shots to 100 yds.

I had a XP-100 in 7BR.  This round should be very capable of taking mule deer out to 200 yds, it has similar energy to a .30-30 and should be plenty accurate.
