Even the 1:9" twist rate barrels don't like the bigger bullets, stick with the 40gr-55gr and you should do fine. The 60gr Vmax has done well in the 1:12" barrels, it would be a good candidate as well.

I shoot 69 Sierra's, 60 gr Horn HP's, 55 gr Nos BT's, 55 gr Rem PLHP's, 50 gr Nos BT's, 40 gr Horn VMax, & 40 gr Nos BT's in my 1:9 twist Savage....and all shoot very well.  The 69's, 60's, & 55's shoot the best.

Try some IMR4198 or Accurate 2230C or 2460.  I use Winchester primers (plain...not 7.5's...just regular Win.).

acloco, we're talking NEF/H&Rs here, what works in a Savage is irrelevant. The shallow rifling in the .223 Handi doesn't work well with the heavier bullets regardless of the twist rate, if you look at past posts on the subject, you'll see what I mean. ;)

Gotcha...should have explained a touch more.

Why I recommended the other three powders.

My 204 NEF hates any powder and bullet but 32 gr VMax's with H4895 and CCI 450 magnum primers......which is another subject.

But, it took me a bit of time to find what my NEF liked....as it will take this person as well.
