.223 - No more WWB 45gr'ers?
« on: October 23, 2006, 07:31:36 PM »
My cousin and I bought Survivor's in .223 this past May, and played with them for about 2 weeks. We could not get them to shoot worth a damn. We tried Remington 55 PSP, Winchester 50gr Ballistic Silvertips, and the Winchester White Box 45gr jhp's. Nothing shot good. I then started browsing through this forum and found a couple of tips to clean the barrel with a good cleaner. So I ordered Brownells Compound cleaner, and we cleaned the barrels throughly. They then shot the Winchester White boxes hole in hole at 40yds. So we figured we had our coyote guns ready for this fall/winter. Well now the time is here to purchase ammo, and I can not find any of the Winchester White Boxes, anywhere. I have checked everywhere in a 100 miles radius of where we live, and Midway has them out of stock, and no backorder option. I was wondering if you guys could give me advice on some different types of bullets to try. Both of the guns have 1:9 twist. I would even like to go with a higher grain bullet such as a 60 or 62gr for deer hunting. I barely kill a deer over 70 yards where I hunt at, so the 62gr's will kill a deer at the range, as long as I do my part. Thanks for any advice,
John

try the usual online places:

www.natchezss.com
www.sportsmansguide.com

win 64gr. power points seem to get the nod most often.  midway has them in stock, although natchez is $2 cheaper.

hope this helps and happy hunting!

Try the Sierra 69 gr BTHP's....with your 1:9 twist, you need a bullet with a long bearing surface.

Don't plan on the 1:9" twist .223 H&R barrels shooting the typical heavier, longer bullets that the 1:9" twist normally shoot good, their track record shows they like the same bullets as the 1:12" twist barrels. For heavier bullets, the 63gr Sierra #1370, 64gr Win PP  have been reported to shoot very well out of both twist rates.

Sportsman's Warehouse had the Win White box 45gr JHP for $13.99 a box just last week. Other factory ammo that shoots good is the Ultramax reman 40gr Nosler BT and Black Hills 52gr.

WalMart shows the 45 WWB as a warehouse out (meaning that none are available from the supplier).  It has been like this for 2 months for the warehouse servicing our store.  I read that Winchester Ammo was not selling 223 to civilians for the next 9 months, but just assumed that it was the FMJ.  That was the reasoning for dropping the 40 round Value Pack FMJ, but keeping the hollowpoints.  I am willing to bet that all 223 brass is being used for 5.56 NATO over at Winchester.

hello...to be honest the lack of availabilty of this ammo may be to your benefit ?? i understand lot's of folk's have good luck off the bench... in my experiance's i don't like this ammo for coyote's...it blow's them up BAD !! my bullet of preference for coyote's is a soft point...if the other ammo you mentioned shoot's within reason that would be good !!! not trying to turn the thread around...just my thought's...

why wouldn't you want to "blow up a coyote BAD"?  are you saving the pelt?  (i'm not trying to be sarcastic, i'm just curious)

the 45 gr. hp's are designed for very shallow, explosive penetration.  i blew up a groundhog bad at 60 yards with one, and that was exactly what i wanted.
When the whole world is crashing down around me, atleast I'll have my SKS.

It seems there may be a problem recerntly getting some lower priced .223 ammo. I have been looking for some 53-55 grain Remingtom "Core-Lokt" ammo for a couple of months with no luck. I can find the more expensive Remington .223 ammo but not the $11.99 stuff I have been looking for. If the question is should I get ammo or the guys over in Iraq and Afganistan, I want then to get it....<><... :).

thud...what i have found is they explode on contact..now you have a wounded coyote that you get to track...again that's just my opinion & experiance..if this work's for other's then fine..sorry if i turned this into a predator hunting thread ?? i used to somewhat like this ammo...until i realized that it really didn't work for my coyote hunting application...i'm sure it work's great on "varmint's".

Well my cousin recently took his .223 out and found that the Remington Green/White box PSP at Wally-World are shooting are great, as in hole in hole at 40yrds. So we may have found something that works, but will this ammo be around forever? Who knows. So I think that I am going to take the leap into reloading. My uncle and a coworker both reload so they can help me learn the ropes. I have been reading reloading manuals for about a year. I also picked up the ABC's of reloading. I will be looking into the buying a press kit in the next few months, maybe I can win the ole' girl to get me a kit for CHRISTmas.   I also have access to backyard shooting range out to 100 yards, so that will be convenient. I appreciate any more advice you guys can give, you have helped a ton. Also, the 64gr's shoot well enough to kill a deer in the woods. Thanks

jdr...glad that worked out for ya...i hope you start reloading..ammo availability was one of the driving force's to get me reloading...got tired of depending on the "man" to provide me with ammo !!! now i'm the man !!! i can only blame myself now ?? hey good luck...
