I'd pick the .308 Win. It's accurate, powerful enough, has tolerable recoil, and ammo is everywhere in the world. I have experience using the round in an Encore, a Striker, and an XP-100. Mark Hampton has used several .308 Encores and a Blaser on big game all over the world with great success. I like the 7-08 a lot, but believe the .308 is a superior choice, because of ammo availability and variety.

Glad you got your barrel.  Nothing wrong with the 308 Winnie.

Encore pistol 7-08 is very accurate, really my favorite round in an Encore. I like the 357 Max in my Contender psitol, with 223 a close second.

I have the 15 inch 30-06, and put a 2x Leupold on it, untill I save up the funds for a varible power Burris. The Leupold's home is supposed to be my .480!

Well, I finally made it out to the range New Year's eve and tried out my new 308.  Wow! :o  The recoil definitely got my attention.  I had been practicing with my Contender in 7-30 Waters so this one kinda surprised me.  When I think about it, the recoil was similar to my 44 mag in a 14' Contender when I shoot 305 grainers.  I was shooting some cheap Winchester ammo so accuracy was so-so.  I'll probably try some Federal next and see how it likes that.  Deer season in south Texas doesn't end until January 21st so I'm hoping I'll have an opportunity to try my luck on a good south Texas buck.   :)

I just bought a 308 16" with internal brake for an Encore, I wasn't really thrilled that it had a brake, but it is a bullberry and was a fantastic deal. Am frothing at the bit waiting for it to arrive. One question for those of you who have shot the 308, what is the recoil like? Anyone shooting one with a break? I hunt in Maryland and live in Delaware, Maryland has no restriction as to what caliber or barrel lenght as does Delaware.
