another noobie handi question
« on: October 14, 2006, 05:27:24 PM »
is there a 17 caliber barrel available for the handi? since my last post was answered that there is no barrels available except through h&r, and for a custom caliber you have to rechamber a similar cartridge. i am really wanting to get a 17 remington, but if there is not a 17 available then this would not be possible. thanks in advance for the answers.

Only in .17hmr or .17M2 rimfire for the Sportster, but there have been a couple here that had them rechambered to .17Rem.

They'll fit as good as any other barrel may fit, might need some fitting as any barrel may, each barrel is a little diffferent as it was factory fitted to it's frame. All SB1/SS1(shotgun/rimfire) and SB2(centerfire) frames, except the 10ga and 12ga Slug gun, have the same general dimensions, the materal they're made of is the difference, see the FAQ and Help on frames.

ok i didnt realize the sport was the same frame as the handi, my mistake. so if i order the hmr sporter barrel from nef, they will fit it to a handi frame (which is the same dimensions just different material than then rimfire frame). if this is correct then i am a lot more in the clear now thank you.

No, they won't fit any shotgun frame with a rifle barrel, or a rimfire barrel to a centerfire frame. You'd have to buy either a complete .17 rimfire Sportster, or buy a used barrel. A centerfire or shotgun frame won't work with rimfire barrels even tho they'll fit, the firing pin won't hit the rim of the rimfire ammo, it hits in the center, won't ignite the primer.
