Short Barrel?
« on: October 12, 2006, 08:44:59 AM »
Can a Handi barrel be cut down to 16" and still meet legal 26" length required by law.

I have an idea in my head of a 16.5", just to be safe, 45-70 with a red dot/aimpoint with a synthetic stock for all round hunting.  Would be loud as all get out and probably just kick me retarted with a good hot load, but what a tool that would be.  It would make a heck of a "throw" gun, something to just throw in for a camping trip or to tuck behind the seat in my truck.

from THE H&R HANDI-RIFLE by AK Church

"The barrel was then shipped to Williams with instructions to cut the barrel to 16 1/2", recrown the muzzle, and re-install the front sight. Federal law on these matters requires a rifle to be at least 26" overall, and have a barrel at least 16 inches. My rifle in its finished form would be 30 1/2 inches. A letter from BATF (the Bureau of Alcohol Tobacco & Firearms [diatribe left to Miles]) stated they had no problems with the project."

My 18" 30-30 and 20" 45-70 Handi's are not offensive at all, even with naked ears. But both are low pressure rounds (30-30-factory & 45-70 -Springfield level) as I load them. If you are going to be firing hi-pressure loads, it will get your attention, especially in the field where we normally do not wear ear protection. I had 18" 308s and 30-06s, and those b.., barrels were not nice at all.

I have both short and long barrelled 45/70s--a Buffalo Classic and a standard handi.

Shooting the same load, the BC definately kicks harder than the shorter handi--I think it's due mostly to the longer dwell time of the bullet in the bore.  I call my BC "the twister" because after shooting it off the bench I need chiropractic adjustment to my lower back.

I really don't think it's the lack of a recoil pad on the BC that's making the difference.

Hello all.  New here, first post.

Couldn't help myself.....
After reading that article about the 30-30/.357 combo my interest has been more than a bit stired up in these little rifles.  Been playing with the idea of getting myself one for years, but for some reason never have.  Going to be starting a lever project soon (I hope), but the idea of a compact little 30-30, (with spare .357 barrel of course  ;D ) may just get me out and hunting sooner than I was expecting..........
Like I just posted on another forum.......... You may just expect another Handy rifle convert out of this  ;D !
I best be getting back to my 'studying', but I may be posting a lot of newbie questions fairly soon, so please bear with me  ::)!
Thanks quickdtoo for the link here!  Definitely appreciate it!

I've been tossing around the idea of the short .357Mag - I already have the barrel.  Just haven't been able to shoot the thing to see if I want to rechamber to .357 MAX, or if .360 DW will fit.  I recently had C3-4/C5-6 vertibraes fused, and haven't recovered yet.

A short 16.5" .360DW with 180gr bullets with a "snake charmer" stock that can fit in a sleeve on a lite pack sure would be "Handi".

I'm now going to try to find a .500 S&W to try out,(Or a 30-30...undecided between the two yet) with a .357 mag barrel to bob back.  Love to try out a short barrel .32 H&R mag, but oddly enough, they don't seems to provide barrels for that round  :(  Would seem perfect for a little pot filler gun ...
