Does anyone have any info on hog hunting on public land near Hemphill TX.  I understand there is some Federal land nearby that is good for hogs.

Try the 4C recreation area over near Ratcliff off Hwy 7 in Crockett natl Forest. There's a hiking trail strung all about the Neches River bottom. Hikers leave food on the trail, hogs come in and tear up the trails. Really irritates the park rangers. Contact the field office for the gamewardens/park rangers. When i was out there, they were quite helpful in suggesting areas. I haven't been out there in about 8 or 9 years, but I can't imagine things have changed much. It is a national forest, so rifles, shotguns, bows...no pistols, though.

Hemphill sits in the middle of the Sabine Nat. Forest and yes it has hogs. The southern end of the forest is the moore plantation and it is type II requiring a permit. Lots of hogs in the big creek bottoms.

What is a Type II area?  I assume it has something to do with hunting regs in TX.  Is it geographically based or wildlife population based?

Type II permits give you access to several 100 thousand acres of land to hunt on in TX in the form of natl forests, core of engineer land, some state lands and private land leased by the state. I used to deer hunt on these, but got tired of getting shot at by idiots (even during bow season!) in my local region. Outside of deer season, they're great for hogs, varmints and small game. Go to the TPWD website for more info or stop by a branch office for more precise info.
