anyone have info on current production High standard 1911's?
« on: March 21, 2003, 06:10:27 PM »
reacently while looking around for a current production 1911 in USGI guise. i was told by an on-line aquaintence about High Standard making a USGI clone called the "GI model", a day or so later i called up High standard (which is HQed about an hour from my house) adn asked if anyone in the area carried that model in stock.  I was told a possible location, and visted the shop.  there i Found two examples which are about as close to the WW2 production 1911A1, as i have seen anywhere on a current production gun including the new Colt version (even the 'maker's marks" are what i would call "GI minimal" while the colt's i've seen still have the huge rollmarks)  .   from what little examination i could make of it in the store, the gun is tight but smooth. and well finished (though for some reason the trigger looke like unfinished Aluminum, but that's an easy fix).   since i have no intention of buying a 10 cent washer from the store where i found these guns (i went there only b/c alan at HS said they stocked the gun).  i did not take them up on the offer to try it out on their indoor range.  so i have no idea if the gun will as they (the clerks) claim feed "everything they've tried".

since i have heard great reveiws and horrid reveiws of High Standard's 1911 (most of the horrid reveiws came from people with guns from 2-3 years ago), and none of these dealing with the GI-spec version.  i want to try and find out if anyone has experience with these guns.

BTW i am further enticed to try this gun, b/c as well as being to my eyes more a "correct" Mil-Spec gun than the springfeild, it is also surprisingly inthe same price bracket (or less) as the SA.   my local dealer quotes it at $419 ($50 over his cost),  where as the plce that has the two examples in stock wants $498 (this is MSRP, can you see WHY i don't do business with them?)

any help, info, or advice you can give would be appreciated.

thank you

Who is making 'High Standard' guns now? The 1911A1 model sounds interesting - thanks for the heads up.

Firearms International Inc.   they're a Houston based company that also now owns the US rights to the IAI trade name.

according toe the company history, in '93 they bought out the trademark and assests from the original nation parts distributor G.W. Elliot Inc. who had owned the remaioning assets, repair parts, adn trademark rights since HS folded in the early 80's.

from everything else i've seen by them (from the current production High Standard .22s, the IAI M-1 Carbines) the current company is a good one.   but it is always best to get teh experience of folks who've owned them.  so i decided to ask before i buy.

I don't know about the 1911s but their 22s are being rejected widely be target shooters because they are not nearly of the quality that they used to be. I think this may be a case of a company retaining a name for brand recognition, but delivering a product unlike the original brand.
