first time hog hunting i think i missed him?
« on: October 21, 2006, 05:35:01 PM »
I have always hunted deer but the lease i've been on for the last 2 years has hogs on it so i decited to do some hog hunting. Yesterday i weat out to try my luck at it at about dark i decited i better start making my way back to my truck. As i walked past my feeder it went off so i set there for a minute and from where i just walked from walked out what guess to be about a three hundred pound soul. About forty yards from me i have never shot one so i put around behind her left front sholder she took off at a dead run away from me and i lost site of her. I couldn't belive i mist her she was broud side to me at forty yards and my gun is dead on. But from what i've been reading here is that i think my shot was to far back and to low. There are alot more hogs out there than i thought so i'll go back next weekend and do it again. But where do you suggest shooting them at right square in the sholder. Please help i need some words of wisdom. Thanks

First of all,

What was your gun and load?  IMHO, with a good rest, the absolute best aiming point on a hawg is just where the neck joins the shoulder and exactly in the middle!!!!  This point is much easier to hit if the animal is moving at all.  Hawgs live in front of the shoulder...I mean that the heart and lungs are not behind the shoulder like a deer. They are even with the shoulder and the heart is low.  Texasboars.com has a great shot of hog anatomy on a hawg that was shot.

Ain't it fun? ;)

Wild hogs are different than deer but many people wrongly try to shoot right behind the shoulder like a deer.

The following website tells it all on where to shoot a hog.  Study the pictures and see that the heart and lungs are wedged down low between the front legs and the spine is much lower than you you would think.

Here is the sight with pictures of hog anatomy:    www.texasboars.com/anatomy.html

Good luck on your next shot.

Mike

Try to keep your shots from the front of the shoulder forward.  I shot a hog awhile back at about 150 yds. with a 30/06.  At the shot there was no indication that I hit it.  I went to where I had shot her and found some blood about 10 paces from where she was standing when I shot. Tracked that hog about 150 yds in the heavy south Tex. brush, found her dead.  I had hit her too far back (center punched her).  A 30 cal. hole in between the ribs and a 30 cal. hole out.  She had ran some distance.  Always look real good when you think that you have missed.  Often times you haven't.  Hogs can be touch.

Thanks for the web site it will be a great help. It is pretty apparent to me now that i wormed out i went out hunting some thing that i knew nothing about. And shot a good sized hog that ran over onto the other property and probably died thier. I shoot a 30-06 with hornady 150 Gr SST. I went back saturday morning and spent a 4.5 hours looking for her with the grass and goatweads be so thick i couldn't even find where she and i was when i took the shot. The last time i sall her she was headed for the property line so me crossing the fince is not an option i had to call it quits. So i will just have to live with my mistake and go back next weekend and take what i've learned and do it over again. This time they won't be so lucky i learn from my mistakes and missplaced shot won't happen again if i have to i'll air mail one of those 06 rounds through their head. Thanks for all your help this next time i'm out i'll bag me one. Thanks again.

4wheeling79----You've got the right idea----shoot them in the head.

I see a number of great hog dropping shot placement charts and if it works for others, that's super.  But, personally I just wait until they turn so I can shoot them in the head.

Ok.  I heard that if you shoot a hag between the eyes the bullet will flaten out.  Is this true?
have fun! get it done with a 308.

Not sure what happens if you shoot a "hag" between the eyes but if you shoot a hog there even with a .22 short the hog dies. POST HASTE! That's the way we used to kill them when we raised hogs.
