425 Gn Cast Performance load
« on: September 08, 2006, 12:44:53 PM »
High folks, I have been trying to work up a load for my FA 475 Linebaugh. My results have been so-so. I am using 24.5 gns of H-110 under a cast performance 425 gn gas check bullet. Accuracy is ehh. 2.5" groups at 25 yards. I get three real close and then two open it right up. On one case the blue lube had migrated back down the outside of the case wall ( like the pressure was low) but the report was normal. it wasn't much lube but I have never seen that before. Anyway........what would ya do?? I really want to use this bullet. I am going to try some XTP's tomorrow to see how they compare. At least Hornady has load data. Cast performance has nothing for the 425gn. P.S. I am shooting off a bag......am very consistant and have ragged out holes this way with other guns. George ???

Check your cylinder bores.  You just may have a couple that are not big enough.

The bores are all the same. I upped the powder charge to 25.5gns and things improved greatly. I cut the groups in half.My biggest problem is no one out there has max charges for this bullet and H-110. In fact there is nothing on it at all. Cast Performance gave me the starting load (that was the same starting load for the next weight down so it doesn't mean much). Soooooooooooo how do I know what the heck is max......Chrony??? Primers??? measureing the case base???? It seems really goofy that in this day and age there is no pressure data on a very popular bullet. George

Well, for starters, H-110 and WW296 are the same powder.  So by backing down a grain and working back up, you should not have any problems.  Try the Hodgen site for loading data.  You may also go to Sixguns.com and read over the Taffin test of the .475 Linebaugh.

I strongly suggest you obtain a chronograph and use it.

Hope this helps.

I got good results with that bullet and 23 grs of Lil Gin. 1,400 fps and accurate.
