Slight bedding problem. Need help
« on: September 05, 2006, 09:48:44 AM »
Howdy,

Have a Sako finnlight that groups well with one issue.

The first shot consistently hits and then all subsequent shots group tightly 3/4 inch to the right.  The groups are tight, but its maddening that the first shot is left.

Sounds to me like the barrel must be just barely touching the stock and then shifting ever so slightly as it warms.

I did the dollar bill slide and it seems to freely slide up to where the barrel begins its flare just below the chamber.

Recommendations on isolating the cause and what is the fix?

Thanks,

Conrad

I'd venture to say the first shot is off from the barrel being cold, and possibly not fouled enough.

Knowing where your CBS goes is troublesome to some, sounds to me like you already know where it hits :)

There will a POI difference in a cleaned barrel cold bore shot, and a fouled barrel cbs. Its important to know where both hit for hunting purposes, expecially when you going for groundhogs at 1/2 a mile  8)

**2 many go overboard when it comes to cleaning barrels. I know some guys who dont lose accuracy until shot #140. My VLS and others get more accurate after 40 rounds or so. -I wont clean until accuracy drops off-

---Ignore the above rambling if you were already aware of what was typed---

The next time you go out do not clean the barrel and then try it dirty the next time. This will tell you if it's a bedding issue or a clean barrel issue.

If you can, while at the range, shoot one shot, then let the barrel cool - should be quick since there was only one shot fired.  Then fire a second shot with the cold barrel and see where the bullet strikes.
