Winchester - Ranger Bolt Action 30-06

-   Hopefully someone can give me some insight into this rifle.  -  I would like to
buy this rifle at a pawn shop -  Nice looking - wood stock -   Has scope -  They
are asking $399.00 -   Is that kind of price $ reasonable.  I haven dickered with
them as yet but maybe I can get them down a bit.  -  At that price with Florida
Sales tax I would then be looking just over $400.  -  -   I have been invited to
go hunting in upper Canada for Deer (Mule Deer) and maybe beer etc.  ?? The
trip itself  is quit  an excursion.  -  ANYWAY -  This gun is suggested over my
Savage 308 -  They say I would be better off with this higher powered round.
-  Sure would like anyones commentary on this.  -  -

Look at the ballistics of the two rounds on remintong.com, or winchester.com You can compare rounds ballistics there.
I tend to look at the energy figures, especially when the caliber is the same.

I don't think there is enough difference in the two to warrant buying another rifle, especially a different one than what you are used to already.  If the 308 shoots good for you, I'd stick with it.

My opinion

You are paying way too much for the gun.  I had one in 1986 (30-06)- and I payed $400 for it then, new, with a Bushnell Banner scope.

If you want to spend this much money, get a Ruger M77, a CZ-USA, or a Remington Model 700 SPS.  You will be getting what you pay for then.
I refuse to have a battle of wits with an unarmed person.

flbadger you can buy a new all weather stainless ruger 77 bolt action for $500.00 that ranger i beleive has a hard wood stock if you were talking 308 to 338 then theres a difference . i have both and while i use the 30/06 more i wouldn't hesitete to use the 308. Just not that much of a difference to warrent ea new rifle.Your 308 would do fine .

I agree with the others, in no way does the small difference warrant the purchase of a rifle, expecially one that sounds like its price is higher than usual.

If you were asking about the next step up, which most of us would consider being a .300winmag, I'd say yes(towards the caliber, not the rifle in question).
