Sighting in aid
« on: August 24, 2006, 04:06:49 PM »
Have sighted in many a rifle, but never a cannon. So when it came time to sight in my 1" bore cannon, I was not sure how to procede. Most of my shooting is at 50-100 yards. Made up this little adaptor today in an effort to simplify the task. I don't have a lathe, so it is a little crude. Mostly made with a hole saw. The wooden adaptor fits tight in the bore. It is center drilled to hold a small lazer pointer. Got the pointer off a certain auction sight quite reasonable. Had to break off the pocket clip so it would go in deep enough to turn on. Should be able to put the lazer on the target, and adjust my sights to that point. Should also help prevent me from blowing the cronograph apart when we check velocity. Just remember to remove it before you "squeese her off"  Boomer

for what it's worth, I worked on an early military bore sight something like what you made.

To make up for concenctricity errors, rotate it 360 degrees and the center of the scribed projected circle is the point of aim, or at least closer to it then if you just stick it in there random-like.

Laser siight??!!  This board is for the shooting of pre 1899 Black.... Kewl!!!

Align the cascabel ring at 12 o'clock with the Muzzle ring at  12 o'clock  with 6 o'clock on the  bull. Then align the cascabel ring at 3 o'clock across the the top of the trunnion  with the muzzle ring at 3 o'clock at 6 o'clock with the bull.

Make you correction from there.

Now then Douglas!-I know its upsetting but technology does have its uses.A cup of tea and a good lie down generally works for me ;D
I suppose you chaps know about it but there is a site on the web entitled "The Gunners Glass' wherein a description of the proceedures for cannon sighting is given.[sorry don't know how to do links]
I bet those guys would have embraced the idea of a laser with enthusiasm although given the trajectories of cannon balls I think the application would have its limitations.

Gunners Glass

Using the barrel sighting technique to adjust simpley figure how far right or left  and up or down  you are hitting, and move the your aim point in the opposite direction and equal amount.

In the target above the group is 3/4 inch to the right and 1/2 inch high. My new aimpoint would be 1/2inch low and 3/4 inch left of the 6 o'clock aimpot
