DV for 500 Linebaugh

Mr. Smith can you suggest a muzzel velocity for a .512, 440gr, LFN-GC for hogs and whitetail deer? Deer 100 lb to 170 lb, hogs it's unlikely to fine one over 400 lb. I have good shooting loads at 1000 fps and 1220 fps. I can work loads of other speeds.

Thanks

aint veral but i dont think your going to get an answer for a while from him. Ive killed hogs and dear with the .500s with 430s at as low as 900 fps and id about bet even at 7-800 fps aint one that would walk away from a good hit. Two of the quickest kills ive seen on hogs were out of my .475 using a 400 rcbs swc at about 1000fps. In all cases with both guns i had complete penetration and one hog shot with the .475 was shot in the shoulder and it broke both shoulders and exited.

I pretty much use the .500 Linebaugh exclusively for my hunting.

I find that around 850fps nothing that I have shot can stand up to these big bullets.

These are 410gr Cast Performance LFNs at just over 800fps that penetrated over 30 inches in wet newspapers.

They work great on deer and hogs.  Here is a Red Stag I took with this combo several years ago.

I have tried to see if I could get this bullet to stop in a hog, shooting them from all angles.  It just won't stay in them!

The point here is that I don't think you have to push this cartridge too hard.  Those who have sometimes get odd bullet performance.  I would stick with your 1000fps loads and just have fun with it.

Nothing equals experiance when dishing out advise, and the above posts show it.
I've reccomended to many shooters for the 475 and 500 revolvers that they keep loads around 1000 fps for game smaller than elk, using my LFN's or WFN's, and enjoy the gun, as the heavy bullets and wide meplates will do amazing things to game at moderate velocities which frisky 'little bullets' can't match with top velocities.

Welcome back Veral!

I now use Veral's 400gr WFN exclusively in this revolver. That 4 cavity mold really puts out the bullets.

Some folks complain about the WFN, but I have nothing but good things to say about it.

Thanks Veral.

I believe all complaints about inaccuracy with the WFN have been with the heavier weights when shooting at lower velocities, or guns with aren't fire lapped, or if the gun has serious cylinder to barrel missalignment, with this last issue probably bing the most comon cause of low velocity inaccuracy..  The heavy bullets have to be driven at near max velocity.  In 50 cal, a 400 gr WFN is quite short and stabilizes easily without full loads, if it isn't knocked out of alignment on takeoff by bad internal toleranced of the gun.

It is a heck of a good rabiit load too.  Tears up no meat with head shots.
