A new .223 - Rem 700VLS or Savage VLP?
« on: August 06, 2006, 05:54:44 AM »
Just curious as to what rifle most here would choose or if anyone owns one that they would like to comment on. This will be a target shooting rifle mostly 100 yards for now.

Here is one of the rifles - a Remington 700 VLS - 26" barrel and 1 in 12" twist barrel.

Another is the Savage Varminter Low Profile - again a 26" barrel with a 1 in 9" twist. Stainless steel and available in a single shot with soild bottom receiver.

I currently own a .223 made by one of the companies above as well as a TC 14" .223.

I use to be a Remington man, but now, I think the Savage is more accurate and the best buy.........I only own 2, both 17 HMR's, but I have 2 Steven's 200's, 25-06 and 7mm-08...great rifles for $250.

If you want to shoot the majority of bullets offered, you must have the 1:9 or faster twist. The Rem will handle the shorter bullets ok.

whenever i buy my 223 bolt it will be a savage 12FVSS which is pretty much the same as what your looking at just not as pretty, so i guess that gives you my answer.
I know what you're thinking. "Did he fire six shots or only five?"
Well, to tell the truth I shoot a Springfield XD so it doesnt really matter.

I know it wasn't one of the rifles you listed, but I have a CZ 527 Varmint in .223 and I absolutely love it.  It runs about the same price as the two you listed and mine shoots 1/2" groups at 100 yards regularly.

On the average, you're more likely to get better accuracy out of the Savage. Also, if you wish to use the heavier match bullets, you'll need the faster twist of the Savage. My vote goes to Savage.
Close only counts in horse shoes and hand grenades.

Give the Tika T3 Varmint a look.  Not pretty but mine shoots dime size groups at 200 yds using the Winchester wite box stuff.
