45-110 Advantage?

I've read of several people that re-chamber their Buffalo Classics (45-70) to 45-90 or 45-110.  When using smokeless powder how much real advantage is gained? 

The 45-90 and 45-110 offer more volume, therefore overall pressure should be able to be increased while still retaining the pounds per square inch limit in the chamber.  However when using cast bullets I beleive I can achieve close to 2000 FPS with a 405 gr bullet, would the advantage be to use a heavier bullet at 2000 FPS?

My interest is more a curiosity because I don't beleive my shoulder could stand the recoil anyway.

According to the #48 Lyman manual, they were able
to get 200 fps more with a 400 grain bullet in the
.45-90, as opposed to the .45-70.
A .45-110 might add a little more speed to that.
Even so, they are not showing any 2,000 fps loads
with 400 - 405 grain bullets. Some loads get very close
though. It does not look like heavier bullets can
be safely pushed to 2,000 fps or beyond, according to
their data.

I think that your shoulder will give up the struggle before you reach 2000 fps.

While I can't speak for the .45-110, I have rechambered 2 B/C barrels for the .45-90; one for black powder shooting and one for exactly the reason you stated......to get more punch at equal pressure. The smokeless barrel was shortened to 26.5"
and with a 350 gn jacketed bullet I can get well over 2000 (probably over 2100') at less that SAAMI specs for the .45-70. I imagine that with careful workup, you could get a 400 up to 2000' at safe pressure.
 Yes, it does kick.........I put a couple of lead weights in the buttstock and it's current 11 lb weight helps a lot.
 The "more powder=more gas" theory does work.

The .45-90 case is 2.4 inches long, the .458 Win Mag 2.5..
You can push a 350 grain bullet 2,354 fps, with a
chamber pressure of 37,700 CUP, (according to the
Lyman manual)from a .458 Win Mag.
So, if you're considering 40,000 CUP as the limit,
you might as well get a .458.
And of course, you can then push that to 52,000 CUP or so...
This is starting to get out of hand, lol !
