Thinking of going to one gun: which one to keep?

If you had HAD to thin your gun case to one gun would you keep the 30-06 or the 7mm-08? Both are Tikka Whitetails (the 7mm-08 is still in box and has not been shot).  I hunt primarily for whitetail's here in Oklahoma, but am planning an elk hunt in the next couple of years.

I would keep the 30/06.  Not only is it a more versatile caliber but since the other gun is NIB it would fetch a better price when you sell it.

I would also keep and use the 06 but I wouldn't sell or use the 7mm08 for another 20 years, or longer.

For as long as I have been buying firearms, the prices have never gone down.  And I assume it will continue that way.

A NIB sale will always bring a premium over a used rifle in great shape.

If elk is on your menu, then the 30-06 is a better choice.  Still, letting go of a NIB Tikka short-action Whitetail must be VERY hard - especially since they are no longer made.

Are you sure that you have to let it go?  I would keep a hold on it and never let it go.

I'd keep the 7-08 based on the way I hunt and what I hunt. I'd sure hate to see the '06 go but go it would before my 7-08. If I kept two only it would be a hard choice between the '06 and the .35 Whelen. Now that's only talking about the bolt guns since that's what this forum is.

I would keep the 06 also, even though I really like the 7m-08.  Like some of the other guys said, it is a more versatle caliber overall.  But I would do all I could to hang on to the 7m-08 also.

ONLY 1 GUN!!!!! They don`t eat nothing, well mine tend to eat alot of ammo. The old -06 is probibly the most versital round for North American game and the 7-08 is alittle lite for elk so the -06 is probibly the one you should keep. Personally I can`t tell you how many rifles I have without going in the vault and counting them and think everyone should have that many or more!

I'd keep the 7-08. If I need to hunt bigger game, I'd want a bigger caliber.  On the other hand, you can sell the 7-08 as new-in-box condition. They're both practically identical cartridges.

'06 all day long especially with the new low recoil loads.  Even a youngster or lady could shoot it comfortably.

I'm squarely in the "you can never have enough firearms/tools camp" and "I can always use a new firearm/tool". So I'm in 110% agreement with all of the above recommending to keep both. My biggest regrets invariably involve the guns I wound up selling when I should have kept them. I can give a bunch of other reasons why I would personally keep both. I had the inverse problem awhile back in that I was not sure whether to get a 30-06 or 7-08 so I would up getting both and enjoy using both.

But if I was only to hunt deer, it would be a toss-up as to 7-08 or 30-06. If there was going to be a mix of critters from small to large, the 30-06 would be my choice.

Keep the '06 for elk, and sell me '08 for a couple hundred bucks. :lol: Seriously, the '08 will be a bit short for elk, but maybe you should keep it anyway and just borrow a gun for the elk hunt.

If you have to give up one of the rifles, how much for the other one?   Shouldn't ask that.  Wrong forum.

Serously, the 30.06 might be 100 years old, but it has never been beaten as a flexible, do everything round.  As important, you can always find ammuntion.  Every little truckstop/bait shop in the country has 30.06 ammo behind the counter.  I vote strongly for the 30.06

Since moving to Illinois I don't have the chance to use my big game rifles anymore.  If I had to pick between my 25/06 and 300 Win Mag  to get down to one rifle, I'd probably either sell both and get a 30/06 or rebarrel the 25/06 to 30/06.
For a one gun battery you can't go wrong with a 30/06.

Karamojo Bell killed more elephants with the 7x57 (ballistic twin of the 7-08) than most of us will ever see deer or elk. If you can't get the job done with a proper bullet in the 7-08 then ya really need to go back and learn to shoot. Yeah I agree the '06 is a better gun for elk but I'd sure not be concerned about using my 7-08 on them.

I'm trying to understand this question!

Let me think: You only have 2 rifles and want to reduce that by 1 to get down to 1 rifle.   1 rifle?  1 RIFLE?!

Seems like to me your facing North on a South bound mule - You are either looking or going in the wrong direction!

I guess I'd keep my T/C Renegade with the .56 Smoothbore barrel. Roundballs for the big stuff, shot for the little 'uns.  8)

Keep the rifle YOU like best. a 7-08 will kill an elk without a lot a fuss. Though I carry a 338 win mag, truth be told ELK have not taking to wearing bullet proof vest (not yet anyway).
 
                         Here is my Uncle's deer rifle test.
                                              circa 1973
 Take 3 milk jugs of water,  put a jug on top of  two fence post, and the one on the ground between the two fence post. Now back off about 100-150 yards, "stand up like a man" and shoulder your rifle and shoot the three jugs going from center to right then left.
 Which rifle you are able to do this drill with the most comfortably and  reliably  is the one you should keep.

 True be told this is a better measure of the value of a hunting rifle than the  the ballistics on paper. (once you have a bullet moveing over 2500 fps.)

The way i see it, there is nothing in N. America that cannot be cleanly killed by either round so long as the person behind the triger is not a "slob" hunter.  I personaly like the 7-08 better, but i also like the 30-06. (i use a .308 and the 30-06 is pretty close to that!)  I would take the 7-08 simply because it has less recoil and is short action.  Let us know what you decide!

The 7-08 has become my favorite cartridge but if I were limiting myself to one cartridge, it would be the 30-06.  There are just some things the '06 can do handily that the 7-08 cannot.
Were I hunting in grizzly country, I would feel much better toting a '06 than a 7-08.
