Stink Bait...anyone have success with it?
« on: May 25, 2006, 08:42:40 AM »
i'm sure you know what i'm talking about, the stuff that Walmart and Kmart sells in the fishing section.  usually comes in resealable zip lock bags and smells like crap.  they have tons of "flavors" and brands, and i've tried lots of them but with no success.  all the cats we've caught this year have been on nightcrawlers...especially the big fat nightcrawlers.  i have gotten some hits on the Berkley Powerbait Stinkbait of the liver flavor, but no fish on it yet.

someone told me to try some smaller fresh caught live bluegill in the 2" to 4" length, but we havent tried that yet.  anyone had success with that?

cut bait, works great on all cats and live blue gill works good on flat head cats and blue cats. The stink bait is great on rod and reels for blue cats and channels. stink bait works best with no lead.if you use lead make sure you use sliding lead with a 2 ft leader so the lead slides up and down on your line.I use 100's of pounds of stink bait a year.if you  have any more questions email me at bbpalmbay@hotmail.com..I sell catfish and softshell turtles full time.I can give you lots of tips on trot line and jug fishing.

Sonny's is maybe the best of the stuff I've ever found.  I almost always use fresh shad these days, but keep a tub of Sonny's in my boat for emergencies.  Last weekend, I was feeling too lazy to throw the net for shad...so given that emergency, I used Sonny's to catch five nice 2-3# channels in a couple hours.

One time, a friend of mine and his wife were going fishing and asked what I used.  They were only ocassional fishermen, so I gave them some Sonny's.  I explained a little about how to use it, but they apparently weren't good listeners either.  When they got back, they were like, "Man that stuff is a MESS...How in the world do you stand it?"

Turned out they were trying to roll it into balls with their hands, and put it on treble hooks like the old type dough baits...

RF, how are you supposed to use it though?  i've always just balled it up and put it on like the dough baits...maybe i'm not using the stink bait correctly?

Balling it up might be right for the kind you are using.  Sonny's Super Sticky is a "dip" type of bait, though.  And it IS super sticky...like most dip baits.

Dip baits are fished on a special small plastic worm, a small piece of surgical tubing with holes cut in it, or even a sponge.  You dip it in the bait, and then the bait slowly bleeds out leaving a scent trail for the fish to follow to it.  And from what I've seen, the dip baits are WAY stinkier than the doughball kinds.  That might really be more appealing to the fisherman than the fish though.  I kinda got the idea that catfish aren't chasing the scent that we smell when we smell the bait...they're following the amino acids from the blood, cheese, etc.  But the manufacturers know that when we think "stink bait" we're sure to also think the stinkier the better.

Heh...if you do get some dip bait to try, don't try to roll it into balls with your hands.  But you'll likely see what I mean once you get a little experience with it.

Stink bait should be working reeeaal good now that it's hot. You aren't catching any because you have to fish stink different that live or cut bait. Put the stink bait worm on the bottom at the head of a hole, just off the bottom. Now you got to watch real close cause they don't just eat the stuff. They don't know quite what it is so they nip it and pop it in their mouth for a second or two and spit it back out. Just then, you will see the tip of your pole bob up and down just an inch or two for a second or two, TOO LATE ALREADY! Should have set the hook by then. If you pay real close attention and there is a little channel cat down there it wn't be five minutes. Every ten minutes rebait with a dry worm or spunge.   This is some of the best fishing in the world but catch a couple cats out of a hole and you can bet the biggest cat is still down there. Cut bait is needed then. Good luck and get back to us to see how you did. Ugly sticks work best cause they are limber. Sunnys is the best
