Pontoon redecking ?
« on: October 12, 2006, 09:57:18 AM »
I'm going to replace the deck on my pontoon and was thinking about using the synthetic decking that is used for house decks.Has anyone tried this type decking on a pontoon? Any other material recomendations? I have used the PT plywood before, but it only seems to last about seven years. I can't find any "Marine" plywood in my area, if I could would it hold up any better? Any info would be appreciated.

Thanks............sd550

Cost of PT ply vs. the synthetic deck boards would be pretty expensive if purchased around my place.

Some - maybe most? - pontoon craft are designed to allow the decking to work as a sort of bracing to stiffen the whole structure.  Using typical house decking boards would nulify that bracing. geatly increasing the possibility of your boat "racking" out of square in rough water.  That would eventually lead to structural flex cracks and joint failures.

If it were mine, I'd stick to the original design and tolerate the replacement problems.
