Dave.......
The serial number on your rifle falls among rifles made in 1950 according to my records.
However the most sure way to determine the year of manufacture is through the use of the Lever Boss Code.
Savage began very lightly embossing the Inspector's number and a letter for the year of manufacture in 1949... beginning with the letter "A". In 1950, the letter was changed to "B". In 1951, the letter was changed to "C".
Look on the
front of the lever boss... that extension of the lower receiver into which the lever is inserted and rotates. You may need a magnifying glass to make out the Lever Boss Code which is pressed inside a FAINT oval on the front of the lever boss.
In your rifle's case, the letter should be a "B" indicating a 1950 manufacturing date. I agree that with the information you provided about your rifle, it sounds like an "EG" model... one of the most common and yet, most beautiful Model 99s. ever made. In fact, your rifle was made during the Model 99's "hey-day" when its quality was at about the highest point ever reached.
The .300 Savage cartridge, "father" of the famous .308 Winchester, is a top choice as a deer cartridge.
