P08 Luger
« on: February 22, 2007, 02:39:19 AM »
I have a 1920 Reworks Comm. that I've been trying to get to fire reliably. Tried all combinations of loadings, magazines, springs, parts, etc. without good results. Finally a friend let me try some of his handloads. They worked! I've always heard that the Luger needs "hot" ammunition. Not in my case. The loads that worked are just the opposite! My loads are 124gr plated RN with 4.0 HP-38 @ 930 fps. Mild recoil and very accurate. 100% reliable. I really enjoy my Luger since I can fire it all day long now.

badlandsbutch:  I recall that the standard German 9mm load for the P-08 pistol was a 124 gn bullet at about 1080-90'/sec.  When you said 'fire reliably' did you mean 'function reliably'??  The P-08 requires a certain amount of energy to function properly and that advocates bullet weight over velocity.  If your pistol functions reliably with your 124 gn/930'/sec load, that is feed, fire, extract, eject, rechamber and go to 'bolt open' after the last round then she's working right with that load and you can enjoy...............

However, a re-worked Luger may have undergone a recoil spring change.  In the, ummmm, old days when American ammo makers kept 9mm loads on the mild side to avoid liablility with older guns like the Luger and other WWI and WWII souveniers, it was a common practice to take a coil at a time off the Luger mainsping until she worked on American ammo.  If you started using something like Canadian Military Ball then you got a new spring and shot the hotter load.  However, that was nearly 40 years ago and I don't recommend loads any hotter than what you are currently using for the old P-08.  HTH.  Mikey.

Yes, I did mean function reliably. I did change to an aftermarket commercial spring (GPC) but do not know the rating. I understand Wolf springs has 36, 38 (std) and 40#
springs. I'm concluding that I am using a 36#. My pistol is a 1920 Reworks Commission pistol that was East German issue (Black plastic grips and mag bottom). Not a pretty pistol, but has been ;overall,  enjoyable to work with.
