Yes you can shoot 458 Win Mags in a 458 Lott. Here is a reference for you.

What about any damage to the chamber just before the rifling? Can any damage occur after lots of use w/ 458WMag ammo?

No, it won't damage it, I shoot win mags out of my lott all the time, and the chamber and rifling is still perfect.  You would have to have some really crappy steel in the barrel to have damage.

What's also nice is that if you were ever separated from your Lott ammo on a trip, the 458 Win Mag can be found virtually everywhere.  Could save your trip!

458 Win mag is the most popular BIG Bore in the world today, even more so than the 375H&H. I believe what he was refering to is that in areas where a big bore would most likely be used i.e. AK or Afri. one can likely find a box of 500 gr 458 WM on sport shop shelves and a handful in most camps.
In that respect I'd rather have my 458WM with me than 470,577,etc.

Ditto.  I'm from a small town (3000) and you can find 458 winmag on all gun shops shelves.  Both of them.   ;D
