homebuilt gunsafe

Has anyone bought materials like sheetrock, steel plate ect and built thier own gun safe. You could build it as big as you want any design you wanted.
If you have any ideas on the subject please share them.

If it were me I would consider reinforced concreet walls and find a used vault door. I see them for sale every so often for $1000 or so.   KN

Will be putting one in when I build a home.  Would be nice to have a 20x20 room or so... I've got this vision:  Chandeleirs, Zebra rug, beautiful wood gun displays, leather............... Ok, time to wake up  :-D

Volt door and concrete walls is a good idea.

Re-enforced concrete for the walls is the easy part, its the door.  Vault doors weight "TONS" if you go that route I would ask my local banker who moves their safety depost boxes etc and consult them before you build.

What ever route you choose don't forget about air circulation and a way to bypass the door lock if it gets closed while you are inside.  Mmm a walkin freezer door just might be your ticket for a door but you will have to create somthing for a secure lock.  

Another idea would be to check with your local "vault" maker.  These vaults are for plumbing but most of them make other precast items.

A welder friend of mine did take home a vault door from some building his company was demolishing. He built that gun safe of all gun safes, and stocked it by buying up the collection of every deceased gun owner within traveling distance. The only trouble I have with this is that he will NOT name me in his will.  :P

A friend of mine bought a jeweler's safe from a jewelry store going out of business. He picked it up for $250. It was larger than my brother's 32 rifle safe and just as heavy. I think the darn thing was also fire rated. If you live in a large city most jeweler's keep an eye on eachother and would know who is in business, and who is going out of business. One could pick one of these up, or two of them and build around them, thus, building them into a building. My buddy just put the damn thing in his machine shop. Just a thought. Tom Purdom :D

A good friend of mine owns a welding/fab shop and decieded to build his own safe. When I first saw it he had just completed the door. Just the door weighed 1300 lbs. By the time he got done he had to get a semi size wrecker to lower it into the outside entrance to his basement. Then he rolled it into place with pieces of 3" well caseing pipe. Real over kill, but then his collection makes mine look cheap. He has some really cool stuff.

I ordered FEMA's book on Safe rooms instead of wasting all my ink printing it off their site. It has plenty of plans for plans and materials listed that you could build your safe into or even as part of.

Hurricane Rita ruined a thousands of firearms in SW Louisiana. In my two mini safe's I had an H&R Barrel rust up and 2 Ruger Mk II magazines rust. everything else had enough oil to survive 14 days of no a/c.

A past buss. associate of mine was lucky enough to but a safe out of BRANCH BANK that they were cl;osing! put it against the side of his hse. and built around it! did an exellant job!  turned out to be just the thing needed and   it never looked amiss!

My house was robbed about 20 years ago, they got 20+ guns// I bought a vault door from a closed bank and cut a hole in an exterior basement  wall. The add on room, 18x24, has plenty of re-bar in the walls and ceiling and is the foundation for a very nice patio.. The wife approved! A dehumidifier is always on duty and most older vaults have an acess on the inside that allows the lock mechanism to be unlocked, easily.. Mine also has a set of key locked doors that allow easy acess during the day when I'm home. They're down for painting now but will get rehung. The big door is closed and locked when we leave.. There is a I-beam running the 24 foot length and it's foam insulated.. Best of all,,it's not full yet!!

Sorry to hear that :evil: It's hard to see people get valuables stolen when we work so hard to be able to buy what we do i.e. guns  :cry:
