Savage M99 Military Musket
« on: September 03, 2005, 12:26:20 PM »
The wife and I visited the Halifax, NS Citadel yesterday.  If you are ever in the area, it is really worth a look.  In the military museum, they had a Savage 99 in military trim.  I did not see a bayonet mount, but it had a military stock.  Unfortunately, they did not list the calibre ( like my British spelling?).  Does anyone know about Savage having a Canadian contract?

Also,  the Halifax Alehouse is just down the hill, and has good food at a good price, a good atmosphere, and some really good ale on tap.

I saw one on gunbroker.com about two years ago, and at the time, did not know they had a military '99.  If I recall it sold for a premium (x,000s).

It had a full-length stock, and forearm, and longer barrel.

How many the Canadians used would be interesting information.  Might be in the Savage 99 book.

1899....303 Savage, i believe. On large contracts could be made for any military ctg.
  (2) bayonets listed. one was an Angular Bayonet the other a Sword Bayonet. Don`t know about a Canadian Contract.

i know some US national Guard units purchased the 1899 in .30-30, and the NorthWest Mounted Police used them as well, but not anywhere near Halifax, the NWMP models all had the standard sporting stock and where either .30-30 or .300 Savage. the Canadian Army has never used the Savage 99, unless this belonged to some private militia, and back then some units purchased weapons of there choosing, but even then i find it doubtful.
