The Blackpowder Mortar and Cannon Moderators met this past weekend and reviewed several muzzle loading Mortars and one Black powder Muzzle loading Shoulder fired anti-tank gun and bunker buster...Cat Whisperer will be along shortly with picture and details, take her away when your ready CW!

I happen to know of a custom gunsmith who is building an exact copy of a Kynoch Brown Bess style wall/rampart gun in .98 caliber. Awesome!

It was a MOST interesting and fun day.

I'm still waiting to get the pictures from the photographer - some very interesting shots (pun intended).

We were firing at 100 yards and beyond. Beyond was indirect fire into where we thought the garden area was (in the middle of a wooded area beyond the 100 yard targets).

We DID find a dead woodchuck near the garden. But it would be less than truthfull to claim that one of the mortar rounds had killed it.

This is what's called a tickler...we had guns from 1/4 inch to 2 1/4 inch, pretty girls, dogs, pickup trucks and lots of black powder smoke!

Sounds like you guys had a whale of a good time. Can you tell us a little more about the soda can mortar? What's the tube made of, schedule of tube, ect...

Until the maker of the can caliber mortar can reply with facts, I seem to recall the tube was 4140 or 4130 DOM (drawn over mandrel) seamless tubing. Don't know the bore diameter, nor the wall thickness. But we've launched concrete filled cans over 400 meters. Full cans go further than half cans. It is very economical on powder too. Shoulder firing it is FANTASTIC - you hear the fuse sputtering away just inches from your ear, knowing that if something were to go wrong - you'd never know it. The breach plug is threaded in and welded (note that when you weld 4140 it MUST be heated to some specific temperature and slowly cooled to avoid cracking).
