I am thinking of building an old bruno large ring 98 mauser in 35 whelen.  Can anyone see any major problems with this idea?  i will also be shooting mostly cast through this gun.

Can't address the large ring issue or cast bullets but I did choose the 35Whelen to build a rifle for a one-off Elk hunt this fall.  I used a savage long action and will change to another calbier after the hunt.  The 35Whelen is just too much  caliber for me either deer hunting or paper punching.  I can always re-install the barrel if I get another ticket.  I think it to be the best mid size caliber choice for a .473 bolthead and is suitable for any larger game in North America.  Remington makes brass so you will not have to form you own.  The 338-06 was a close second in my decision making process.  Good luck.

the cast lead bullet light loads is the reason I went with the 35 whelen/instead of the 338/06...My wife has to learn how to shoot this moose gun & with light loads of Unique powder & a 180 gr 357 pistol bullet she can practice all day long..Cheap, Accurate, easy on her shoulder getting to learn that big gun...mike in ct

338-06 recoil

If recoil is your concern, load up some 200 grain bullets with 58 grains of IMR 4350. I haven't loaded any Barnes bullets for the 338-06 but I am sure the 160 grain would be about the same.

If bullet cost is really a major factor, then the varity of bullet weights and hard cast make the whelen your best bet.

I took a Mauser action and sent ti to Shaw several years back and had it barreled for .35 Whelen.  Put a set of Williams recever peep sights on it.  Dropped it into a Bell and Carlson stock and really liked the way it shot.  Made the mistake of letting the wife shoot it one weekend, next thing I know she took it to a gunsmith friend and had it cut down to her length of pull 12".  She loves it, I lost it.  She told me "Get over it, Go buy another one, This ones mine, I like it".  The stock is so short I cannot shoot it.  She's only 4'11"  But if it keeps her interested in hunting with me, so be it.  I can always build another one.

What Is A Veteran?
A 'Veteran' -- whether active duty, discharged, retired, or reserve -- is someone who, at one point in his life, wrote a blank check made payable to 'The United States of America,' for an amount of 'up to, and including his life.' That is honor, and there are way too many people in this country today who no longer understand that fact.

Sourdough,

You are a lucky man!
There are a lot of men out here that wish they had a wife that would take a gun and make it their own and tell them to "get another one". Most of us have to find a way to convince the wife the need for a new gun. My wife is like yours - when I say I want something she just says, "You deserve it, why don't you go get it?" and then i have to sit down and back up because it isn't what I need to spend the money on right now. Good women are hard to find - I know, it took me 49 years to find mine.
