Can someone explain the newer short mags big caliber rifles....why not buy the long or run of the mill mag......Short mag is it short lived?Or is short mag about recoil or long distance shooting.....and are the older mag calibers the same thing just not stubby and fat.....I don't know please tell me!

The idea behind the short mag. is that you get a more efficient cartridge in a a rifle that weighs a bit less. I have a Kimber 8400 in 270 WSM and have been very pleased. It likes just about every load I have tried. It get close to 270 Weatherby performance burning much less powder.

For me the short stubby cartridges are here to stay wsm and others
I saw what the short stubby 6ppc did to my 40xb .222 it now owns all the records, the 6.5/284 another of the short stubby ones, seems to be extreemly strong at 1000 yard matches. I got a 7mmwsm from Hart Barrels its just simply amazing. for me if the wsm had came out in 1903
ahead of the .06 you would never of heard of .270,280,.264 on and on as at that time the milatary guys would have jumped on it
just a crazzy old Canucks view of the short stubbys

I have a 300 WSM and 223 WSSM, and they both perform great. The theory about efficiency must hold true, because they are as more accurate than my similar rifles in the longer actions, and shorter and lighter to carry. mag capacity is limited, if you think that it's important.
