Suspect charged with murdering New Hartford policeman
A man charged with murdering a New Hartford police officer Monday is being arraigned in town court today.
Pennsylvania resident John T. Healy, 46, is charged with second-degree murder in the the death of New Hartford police officer Joseph Corr, 30, a six-year veteran. Authorities still are searching for another suspect in the murder, which started with a jewelry store robbery in New Hartford.
A break in the case occurred around 10:15 a.m. today when Emergency 911 dispatchers reported that the red tow truck police had been searching for in connection with the robbery/homicide was found in Allentown, PA.
Were all very shaken, but were all professionals and we have a job to do, police Lt. Timothy ONeill said, according to the Associated Press. Were going to find him and bring him to the justice system to face the consequences of what hes done.
The robbery at the Wilcox jewelry store in New Hartford, just south of Utica, happened about 8:30 p.m., police said. Officers arrived on the scene within minutes and began pursuing the suspects Buick Regal, which sped down Route 5 for about three miles before crashing into a gas pump at the Byrne Dairy convenience store on Route 5 in Kirkland.
Healy was arrested at the crash scene while the other suspect fled on foot, police said. Corr was shot while chasing the fleeing man, authorities said. New Hartford police released no other details during a brief news conference in Kirkland.
Corrs survivors include his wife and infant daughter, and his parents.
