Bison Hunt in South Dakota 2007
« on: March 12, 2006, 02:33:48 PM »
I just booked a Bison hunt in South Dakota, it is a 15,000 acre ranch. Time to put my Shiloh Sharps 45-70 with black powder cartridges to use.  :D

I am booked on October 1st of 2007. I know it is a ways out, but I am still excited. I would go this year but I am going on a black bear hunt to Maine in September. Then to Colorado to visit family in October, wish I was going on an Elk hunt.

Where are you going in VT? What is the name of the place? The 375 H&H should put him down quick. My buddy wanted me to use my 416 Rigby on the Bison, but I am going to use my Shiloh Sharps.  :D

Hi Red!

Yep, it is.   He has about 70 bison from about $850 to 3k.  Will probably shoot one for $1,650 that is a three year old.  Plenty of head and about 1300 - 1500 live weight.

I was going to go for a 3 year old but I decided if I am going to get a wall hanger, I was going to make it a big one. I decided on a Mature bull at $2500.00. There are 4 of use going. I can't wait.  :D

I had a shoulder mount of my 3 1/2 yr old bull, it was done by Rocky Mtn Artworks...even with the head turned to the bull's left slightly and his head back like he is roaring...it is HUGE...sticks out of the wall about 4 ft and 3ft top to bottom...the live weight was around 1500# and I put 360# of boned meat in the freezer...delicious!!
I hunted at 4UR ranch in  Ft Pierre,SD this is the place Table Mtn outfitters sells hunts for for $1600 or so for just the head and hide...but I booked straight thru 4UR and bought the entire animal for $1500/skinned and cut up...that was in Dec. 2002

Hi Guys,

You are right about the size of the mount, that's for sure!!!  I saw several of the $1650 bulls and their horns were SCI silver medal for sure.  I'm more than a little concerned about the size of the mount and alot concerned about how much meat I'm going to have to bring home!!!  I have a 9 cubic ft game freezer and will give some away...but...a 2000 or 3000lb bull yields 800 - 1000 lbs of boned meat (about 40% live weight), maybe more plus head and cape is a heck of alot of handling.

No matter!  I'ma go'n anyway!!!

I know the Bison mount is huge. I have a Asian Water Buffalo mounted and it is big, it weighed 1800 pounds.    My wife is going to kill me when I bring another monster mount home.  :-D

Hahahahaha!!!!  Ain't it the truth. My wife is great about my passions but sometimes....

I built a trophy room and I'm already outta room!  Year after next, in celebration of my 50th b-day, my bro-in-law and I are going to Alaska for brown bear and moose.  I'll rug the bear, but, the moose is an issue.  Had a 40"er that I shot in Newfi in 94 and it was pretty big.  I expect a 60"er will be down right huge, so, I plan to build a stand for the antlers that will sit on the floor.  Still got a couple of fallow mounts comming.  My taxidermy bill is like a car payment sometimes!

BTW....would like to get your advise on really heavy 44mag reloads.  Seems brotherinlaw wants a sidearm while in AK.

drdougrx, I would carry some 300 gr. cast performance bullets. I shot a big hog with one, and it went through both shoulders. I reload my own and have them on the max load according to the Hornady book. I load 300 gr. gas check  cast performance bullets, over 17.5 gr. of 2400 powder with Winchester primers.  :D

Thanks Red!

I'm out of the casting business......rather buy'm all done!  I was thinking about loading 320gr LBT's and a heavy dose of H110.  May try a couple of different loads out on my bison shoulder just to see post mortum.

Many thanks for the advise!!!

I'm going back to Africa this summer hunting plains game AGAIN...still haven't got my animals from my last trip over...a total of 5 shoulder mounts and 3 Euro mounts.
Wait till the wife sees my full mount warthog that is positioned like it is climbing out of a hole....she'll pass a stone :-D

You guys are a hoot!  I have a really big family room and I can hang what I want in it, but, I'm thinking of a 400" elk or red stag.  My wife is really good about all of this and I'm lucky....though...a full mount warthog in the dining room....maybe not! ;0)
