Black and white duck?
« on: October 03, 2003, 06:19:16 AM »
I don't hunt ducks but am curious.  I flushed a flock of ducks (about 10) and as the flew straight away they appeared to be black with white shoulder patches.  Any idea what kind of duck I was looking at?

You did not provide a lot of info, like whether you are talking inland fresh water or at the oceanside.  Could be Black duck, Scaup, or Brant.

Fresh water about 60 miles up the Hudson.  The ducks were in a beaver pond.

My guess is Black duck.  The white wing lining in contrast to very dark body plumage is a good identification clue, and may be the black and white you saw.

When you say "wing  patches", do you mean the inside of the wing, or the top?  If it was the inside, it could have well been a black duck; if it was on the top of the wing, then I would say they were probably ringneck ducks.
