I've been thinking about a reasonably priced varmint rifle in .223 and heard that Savage is a good way to go, especially with the adjustable trigger. Anyone have any experience with these?

I hope it is I just put a deposit on one. It's a Savage 12FV-S in .223 they were asking $349.99 for it. This one is Pre-AccuTrigger.

I decided to get the Stevens 200 in .223. Tried my local gun shop plus WW and neither one could get one. They said none of their suppliers had them in stock and didn't know when they would. Anyone have any suggestions?

Check galleryofguns.com and put a watch on it to email you when some are available (if they aren't already). You'll have to transfer to an FFL in your area but that's no big deal and will usually run around another $20 or so.

Walmart would love to order one for you at $269. That gun is my will be one of the next I buy. First I need a 12 gauge shotgun before next dove season.

I tried Walmart and was told they didn't have any available and didn't know when they would. I might have a line on one at a gun shop 20 miles from me. He is supposed to call me if he can get one. I can get one at a shop some distance from me, too far to drive so would have to have it shipped to an FFL holder which would mean shipping/FFL/state tax which would add almost $75 to the price. I'll have to wait and see what happens and try to keep the cost down.

Did you try to order or purchase that day? I was told 5 days on the outside to order a Stevens .270 here in Houston. I went to Bass Pro and got it instead for $199. And it has a Elite 3200 on it. I think I have you for cheap!

You paid $199 for a Stevens 200 WITH a scope? I wish we had a Bass Pro shop around here. I live in Wa. state and we don't even have a Cabela's. Walmart said they could not order one and didn't know when they would be available.

I took a look at Walmarts gun distributors web page, Sports South, and they list every Stevens 200 in stock except one, of course it's the .223. That still leaves nine choices! :grin:

I thought about getting a 22-250 and get it over with. But I like the idea of a low noise, low recoil plinker. Something I can kick around in my truck and yet will work well on small critters. I may just shuck the idea and get a .17hmr since my local shop has several of them in stock.

Randy, you caught me confusing the facts. I bought the .270 for $199 at Bass Pro. And NOW it has the Elite on it. A great rig for less than $400 total.
Big Blue, thanks for checking that Walmart website. Strange they handle all the other calibers and not that one. And it is one of the only calibers I really want!
I have an old Savage .222 (model?) that is an amazing little accurate gun. I might suggest a search for one of those. I bought it 15 years ago in a pawn shop for $175.

I finally found a local gun shop who found a 200 in .223. He said it appeared some are starting to show up. Evidently one of his suppliers got in about 9-10 of them in .223 so I had him order me one. Should be here by Tuesday or so. Now to figure out which scope to put on it. Anyone have some suggestions for me?

Randy, what kind of varmits? If you mean long range, I can't help you. Those guys in the optics forum sure can though.
I really like the Bushnell Elite 3200 on my new gun. $175 with "free" gift. Brighter than any of my scopes. Wish I had a 4200 because it is somehow supposed to be better!

It would mostly be 'yotes on down. Neighbore lady called yesterday and said she saw a 'yote in here back yard. I may have to see what I can do about that. I can't decide between a 4-16 or a 6-24. I'm thinking 6 power would be too much for closer range in a blind. I may go over to the optics forim and ask there and see what happens.

I've got one in 22-250, but posted elsewhere about wanting to retrofit with the accutrigger. My rifle shoots well enough, but I'm sure I could at least cut my groups in half with a good trigger. I'd spend the extra money for the Accutrigger model, or you may be looking at an expensive upgrade or trigger job. Other than that Savage makes one heck of a shooter!

Thanks for the info. Do you know if trigger adjustments for the 110 would also apply to the Stevens 200? I realize they are pretty much the same action. But the Stevens may come with a less complicated trigger for manufacturing purposes to help keep the costs down. If the triggers are the same I'll give the instructions a try. It will be a big help.

The Stevens 200 and the pre-AccuTrigger Savage centerfire m-10/110 and variants share the same trigger and the adjustment procedure is the same.

If you decide to go to an aftermarket trigger, I strongly recommend the SSS (Sharp Shooters Supply). Fred Moreo's design is a complete trigger with new housing, sear, springs etc - it is not a just a simple sear block and lever as is the Timney, Rifle Basix etc. Fred's trigger does reuse the cocking indicator and 3 position safety and is a "drop in". Cost is goning to be around $95.

I have one of the pre-Accutrigger Savages, and I did the second trigger job that Kiwi recommeded. It has made a WORLD of difference with the trigger pull, especially the part about replacing the spring wire with a thinner piece. I now consistently get 3 shot groups that look like this:

Prior to the lightened trigger, it was hard to get that gun to group much better than 3/4 of an inch.
