cut-down a .308 barrel ?
« on: October 21, 2011, 10:47:49 AM »
I really don't like the 15" barrels.  That being said , I have a 15" , .308 , SS barrel from T/C that I'm thinking about having shortened up to 12".  I realize I'll lose some velocity , and the muzzle may jump a little more , but would it still be an effective barrel ?  Anybody out there have a 12" .308 barrel ?  What about having it rechambered , what would my best options be ?  Thanks for your thoughts......

1.  It would be an effective barrel even at 12 inches.

2.  It would make no sense to rechamber it.  If you rechamber it, you will have to rechamber it for a longer cartridge which will cut the barrel length down even more to say nothing about killing resale value.

Shot1 ...I've considered that.  At this time there's been a lot of .308 SS barrels on the market , the value has really dropped.  But you do have a good point. ;)

Grumulkin ...  At 12" , what do ya think I'd get for muzzel velocity with a 130 grain spitzer.  I did chrony my load with the 15" barrel , seems to me like I was getting low 2s.  As long as I could get over 2000 it should work. ???

Thanks to ya both for your thoughts.

You should be able to get mid to high 2000 fps with 15 and 2200 to 2600fps with 12 inch I was thinking the same thing because the end of my barrel has pitting on side.
