Scope/mounts for .500 S&W??? Hey Redhawk!
« on: February 14, 2006, 03:24:54 PM »
Hey Redhawk,

If you get this message, I have a couple questions.  My daughter's finance' bought a S&W .500.  Darn thing must be 16" long.  Anyway, it has a ribbed area on the top of the barrel for mounting a scope. Looks like a regular Weaver type rib, but a man at the gun dealer told him that S&W recommends a Warren mount/rings.  I never heard of Warren...maybe you have.  I know that you have two .500's and any suggestions for scope rings and power range for the scope would be greatly appreaciated.  I'm kinda leaning towards recommending a Leupold pistol scope, but the dealer said the rings would not be adequate.  Find that hard to believe, but I'm not real familiar with that round.  Thanks for any suggestions!

I will be watching this as well, i have tried burris, millet and leupold rings to no availe. my scope is a burris signature 2-7 posi lock. but the scope keeps rotating in the mounts <all mounts used>  I am probably going to send it to SSK industries to have a 4 ring mount put on my gun. I heard they work really really well. little expensive, but then again if you got a 500 so is it.
LUCK when preperation meets opportunity.

kgillard, the Warne rings are great rings and I use a lot of them, they are the Maxima/Magnum Rings. They have 4 screws per ring and a steel cross bar that fits into the rail. It sounds like he bought a PC model S&W500. I have the Warne and the Leupold PRW rings on my 500 and 460 Mags. Here are the sites for the rings. You can order them from most shooting supply companies. I only have to use 2 rings, I have never had to go to 3 rings on either the 500 or 460 mag's. As far as scopes, I like the Bushnell 2X6X32mm trophy. I found that the Bushnells will hold up to the 500 and 460 Mags, at least for me they have. If I did use a Leupold scope it would be there VX-III 2.5-8x32mm Handgun, I don't care for the 2X or 4X EER scopes.

Hey Redhawk,

I think his gun is the XVR, but don't quote me.  The barrel looks to be about 11-12 inches by itself; has a compensator on the front; the scope mount is made as a part of the barrel; and the is curved on the bottom.  I'll be sure to pass on the information.

Just don't know which one I want....the 500 or the 460?????

I have them both, it all comes down to what you really want in the performance. I have two 500 Mags and two 460 Mags. I won't get rid of any of the four. The 4 inch 500 Mag is my back up/tent gun, my 6 inch 500 Mag is one of my big game hunters and my 460's will be for deer on up. If I have an opportunity for long shots the 460 Mag will be the gun I go with. I think the 460 and 500 Mags are hard to beat no matter which one you chose.

Also if his gun is the XVR X-treme Velocity Revolver, it would be a 460 Mag. The 500 Mag in not called the XVR. I think he has the 10.5 inch PC model.  :D

The good thing about the PC models is you don't have to get a scope mount, it comes with a rail. In my opinion the Warne Maxima/Magnum Rings are one of the best.   :D

Is it the PC model? If so, it will have the mount. You just need the Warne Maxima/Magnum Rings. You can buy the rings direct from Warne. The scope is what you feel will work for you. I like the Bushnell 2X6X32mm scopes or the VX-III 2.5-8x32mm Handgun.  :D
