Where Can I Find Actions?
« on: November 30, 2005, 06:13:26 PM »
Before I start, a rifle action is regulated by the BATF.  Since this could be construed as asking for an offer, though not my intent, I'll remain on the safe side.

Firearms must be shipped FFL to FFL or sold face to face in state when and where legal.

Anyone know of an online place where I can find a rifle action by itself?  I've looked a little bit, but have not found anything so far.  Thought maybe someone could guide me in the right direction, as I'm looking to have a custom rifle built up some day.  I'd rather not attempt to find one at an auction site if possible; don't feel comfortable about that for some reason.  If this helps, I prefer a Savage action.  So if there are any places out there that would be useful, please let me know.

Thanks.

Brownells use to sell Rem actions but that is all I know of.  I would contact Savage as they might be willing to sell you an action only.  I think most people just watch for a good buy on a used rifle and use that for a donor selling off what they don't want.
Good Shooting,
George

Just my two cents, but I have had excellent experience with auction sites.  For a remington, winchester or savage action you are far more likely to find a candidate that is already a rifle.  Take what you need and sell the rest or stash it away in the shop so you have something to toss when the wife says it is time to clean out the shop.

Other than the obvious choice of scouring local gun and pawn shops, you might try shoping a new rifle at Wal Mart.  Prices on basic Remington or savage actions are pretty low.  Makes me wonder why used guns are so high around here?  Get a 30-06 or .270 savage action and the barrel alone is worth about $50-70 on eBay!

Here's a good source for Savage accutrigger and pre-accutrigger actions, stocks and Savage take-off barrels.   I've purchased bare and triggered actions and misc parts from him and he's fair and easy to work with.

Jim Briggs

If your're looking for a Savage smith - Fred Moreo at Sharp Shooter's Supply is considered one of the best around.  He also has designed and sells the best comp trigger for Savage centerfire and rimfires as well as comp recoil lugs, bolt handles and other parts as well as match barrels.
Fred or Lisa will help you with anything you need.

These were built this past summer using parts supplied by Jim and Fred, barrels are Lothar Walther in ss and 2 blued PacNors chambered to my dies.  Stocks are Savage BVs.  I did all the crowning, stock fitting & mods, headspacing, bedding etc in my shop.

Thanks alot guys for the input.  Kiwi, thanks for that little bit of info about NSS; I'll probably give Jim a call Mon.

Most likely I'd send it to SSS and have them build it up with a barrel, stock, true the bolt, etc. and pretty much the whole 9 yards.  I read the Savage can be made the lowest cost, high precision custom rifle out there.  From what I've seen, I'm beginning to agree.

hey if your looking for an action and your thinking about any of the above. go to your local walmart and buy one of there guns and take it apart.  you can  get your remington action cheaper by about 60 dollars there than if you buy from brownells.
LUCK when preperation meets opportunity.
